THANK YOU FOR A GREAT YEAR!

Seattle Adaptive Sports would like to extend the warmest of holiday wishes to all our members and supporters. May the New Year bring the best of health and happiness to you and your family.

Without your support of Seattle Adaptive Sports too many youth and adults with physical disabilities would not have been active in sports or recreation, been with friends, or found self-determination from new found skills. We count our many blessings as we go into 2012 to provide another year of sports and recreation to our participates. Because of your support, we were able to:

* Host the Seattle Adaptive Sport Experience sports clinics - the second Saturday of each month, SASE Fencing
September - June a hands-on sports clinic provided an opportunity to try out an adaptive sport. The 2011 year introduced sports in wheelchair basketball, quad rugby, power soccer, skiing,  cycling, fencing, track/field, goalball, blind judo, and sitting volleyball to over 100 participates. Thank you to Seattle Slam, Rolling Thunder, Outdoors for All, Tacoma Metro Fencing, Seattle King Cobras, Blind Judo Foundation and Seattle Adaptive Sports coaches and athletes for sharing your sport.

* Sponsor four wheelchair basketball teams for youth and adults: Seattle Slick DIII, Seattle Storm Women, Jr Sonics Varsity and Prep/JV youth teams. The Seattle Slick and Jr Sonics Varsity team traveled to their competitions across the country and qualified for the NWBA Nationals in Denver, CO this past April. Here our athletes met others with the same inspiration to be the best. Sports scholarships were given to two of our women players to the University of Illinois, where they are attending while playing wheelchair basketball with the college. Being able to provide this program offers social interaction with peers, building of self-esteem and confidence, development of independence through skill building and teamwork; broadens the awareness of abilities; and provides resources and networking for health and well-being for families.

* Host two wheelchair basketball tournaments: The West Coast Conference Championships brought youWCC Thank youth teams from Spokane, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Berkeley and Seattle to qualify for the NWBA National Championships. A great event sponsored by Auburn High School, the Odd Fellows/ Rebekahs, Meridian Kent Kiwanis, Key Clubs of Auburn and Riverside High Schools and Division 32 Kiwanis Clubs.

The Seattle Jam included youth, women and men's teams from Spokane, Tacoma, Portland, Berkeley, Salt Lake Seattle Jam StormCity, Vancouver BC and Seattle for 28 games in two days and over 50 volunteers - the largest combined wheelchair basketball event to hit the Northwest. Our Seattle Storm Wheelchair Team brought together women from the Northwest to play in their new uniforms supplied by the WNBA Seattle Storm. They were looking good!!! A big Thank you toSeattle Jam youth sponsors: Seattle Parks and Recreation, Odd Fellows/Rebekahs, Meridian Kent Kiwanis, Bellevue Healthcare, Varilite, Abilities Unlimited, Image the World photography and all the volunteers for helping make this a fun and competitive event for these amazing athletes. Check out our Facebook page for some great photos of the weekend.

* Support a track program where: nine athletes competed in the Beat the Bridge road race in the pouring rain, on flat tires and freezing cold to come across the finish lineBeat the Bridge winners; our high school athletes competed with their high school track/field teams during the season and competed at the WIAA State Track Championships; and our track coach and soon to be high school senior were off to the University of Illinois Track Camp to pick up tips over the summer.

* Host the 12th Annual Dribble on Wheels Wheelchair Basketball camp, sponsered by the Seattle Thunderbirds DOW 2011Foundation. The camp included 67 youth and adults learning beginner to advance skills from the University of Alabama's women's wheelchair basketball coach, Matt Buchi. There were 15 new campers brand new to adaptive sports and who have continued on to participate in the sport.

* Host The CREW Youth Social each month with the support of the Camp Casey counselors. This fun social gathering is a highlight for many youth and young adults to hang out with friends and their favorite counselors from Camp Casey. The group plans fun events throughout the year for The CREW to provide peer similar activities together withThe Crew Pacific Science Center 2011 friends. Past activities have included: a outing to the Pacific Science Center, the Woodland Park Zoo, helping at the Miller CC Children's Christmas Party and an evening event, the Red Dance. Join The CREW Facebook to stay up to date on what's happening. The group meets the second Saturday of each month.

* Support from our community: The students of the Mercer Trade Inc of Mercer Island High School held a fundraiser to bring awareness to our athletes and programs to the Mercer Island/Seattle community.  Seattle Adaptive SportsMercer Trade Inc basketball players played a fun game of wheelchair basketball against teachers and students to a crowd of parents, teachers and community.  Join us for the next event on April 18th at Mercer Island High School.

A great awareness event was an exhibition of wheelchair baskeCherry Point BPtball for the Cherry Point BP Refinery in Ferndale, WA. By invitation from this Paralympic supporter, BP employees enjoyed learning more about our athletes, watching our teams scrimmage and jumped into a wheelchair to try out the sport. It was a day of great weather, wonderful food, and fun times meeting and mingling with the community. A nice donation for the event was used to carry out our basketball program.

The WNBA Seattle Storm team offered our athletes a fundraising opportunity to attend a game and showcase our athletes during a half-time show. Our players had an Seattle Stormopportunity to play their sport before a large crowd, play on a quality court and receive recognition from the audience for their abilities. It was a fun evening with the amazing Seattle Storm fans. Our women's team is Thankful for the support of the WNBA Seattle Storm for our new beautiful uniforms and usage of the Seattle Storm name for the team.
