Brooklyn Autism Center NewsletterJanuary 2011
Greetings!

FilizThis month, we wanted to introduce all our parents, board members, and supporters to Filiz Zengin! Filiz has been volunteering at the BAC for several years, but in the past few months, she has also been working here part-time to create videos for the BAC web site, a video modeling library for the school, student art projects, and much more. Filiz is also hoping to someday start a film festival that will feature movies created by students with disabilities!

We are so glad to have her here, creating awesome videos for the school! Check out her work on the BAC web site, and look out for the video modeling library - coming soon to the BAC lobby.
Guggenheim Partnership
This February, the BAC will be continuing our partnership with the Guggenheim Museum! Art educators will make two visits to the school to do art lessons and projects with BAC students. We will also be taking a field trip to the museum on a day when it is closed to the general public.  We are excited to provide this opportunity for our students to visit a world class museum and participate in this pilot art education program for children with special needs!

John Dewey High School's Special Donation

Over the past two years, students at John Dewey High School, a public school in Brooklyn, have worked hard to make generous donations to the BAC. This December, these students and their teachers made a visit to the BAC bearing gifts. They held a drive for donations of school and cleaning supplies that will keep BAC cabinets stocked for weeks! The students also selected a special gift for each BAC student based on his or her interests. During their visit, John Dewey students brought along a handmade robot which BAC students took turns riding! The robot was controlled by a laptop computer. It was a special day, and we are so grateful to have the support of these thoughtful students!

Stand-Ups Give BAC: Comedy Fundraiser Update
Thanks to everyone who has bought tickets, donated auction items, and helped spread the word about this event! We have sold more than two-thirds of the available tickets,  but we all still need to keep promoting so that we have a sold-out house on February 8th!

We are still in need of a few great auction items. Please think about whether you or someone you know would be willing to donate a unique item or service. The auction raised several thousand dollars last year, so we hope to have success with it again this year! All donations are tax- deductible.

Thanks for reading this newsletter! We are looking forward to another great school year. Please continue to help us thrive by spreading the word about the BAC to your friends, families, and people you meet in the autism community!

Sincerely,

Sydnee Jorgl
