WOW! FANTASTIC! INCREDIBLE !
The Valley's 2nd Largest
Hail Storm in History!
October 5th, 2010 will be a day most of us will remember. The kind of story we'll be telling over and over for years to come! By all accounts, it is in the top 10 storms in Arizona's history. Ask anyone who has been here for a length of time and they will tell you so!
The hail brought 4 separate storms throughout the day which dropped hail as large as 2.5". The hardest hit areas were Scottsdale, Glendale and North Phoenix. With the exception of a few areas, the entire valley witnessed the impact of this record breaking storm. The largest hail produced was up to the size of tennis balls (2.50") The Grande finale was between 5:45 and 6:15 across a five-mile-wide streak and was up to 1.75" in diameter. Remarkably, all the incredible damage we have seen and/or heard about were caused in just 1-2 minutes. Hail Watch.com reported that approximately 529,000 single family homes were in the 'affected area'. Every glass company, HVAC company and roofing company knows it. We are grateful for the influx of calls as a result of this storm and happy to provide employment for many roofing tradesman. We are especially grateful to our customers that continue to extend their confidence in the quality of our work as they exhibit patience while we work to meet the needs of our customers, and our community. We do not take that trust for granted!
Hidden Damage
You can see the broken skylights and windows, as well as the dents in your vehicles, but many are not able to see the damage to their roofs! Flat roofs and Shingle roofs were the hardest hit. We urge you to have your roof inspected by a licensed Arizona Roofer to assure you are not sitting on undetected damage.
An additional concern is your roofs' manufacturers warranty. GAF Shingles and ProTech, a local foam manufacturer have both sent out reminders that hail damage does void your manufacturers warranty. Tile roofs held up much better, unless your tile is a Mexican Sandcast, while a beautiful tile, it is also quite fragile.
This photo shows just how fragile it is.
BEWARE: Storm Chasers Are Here
Many of you have had door knockers, hangers and phone calls from roofing companies and other contractors who want your business. While insurance companies allow you to choose your contractor- the burden falls on the consumer to assure that the contractor they are choosing is a reputable one. Storm Chasers are out of town workers who travel to storm damaged areas to fill in the need for contracting services when the demand out weighs the supply. At best they are often not licensed to do business in Arizona. At worst they are not licensed at all. They pray on peoples emotions and then leave town after they've had their share of the business.
In Arizona to contract you must be licensed, insured and bonded. The Arizona Registrar of Contractors (ROC) is the State agency responsible for managing and overseeing all contracting activities in the state with the goal of protecting the consumer. They strongly advise NOT to use unlicensed contractors, or those not legally able to conduct business in Arizona. The best defense is offense. Know what you should be aware of and have the right questions to ask to protect yourself. There are many ways storm chasers operate, the primary ways are simply operating without a license, or operating under someone else's license.
Why Not Use Storm Chasers? - Not licensed in Arizona (This is illegal).
- Operating under someone else's license. (This also is illegal).
- May not have insurance;
- If something happens to your home it is not covered.
- If a worker injures themselves at your home you could be liable!
- Neighbors may report them and they may not be able to finish your job.
- They may take your money and run!
- You have no one to call for warranty repairs.
- Shoddy workmanship standards.
- Many roofing specifications in Minnesota, Illinois, etc. are different than Arizona.
- Not helping the local economy.
Lyons Roofing is on the board of the Arizona Roofing Contractors Association (ARCA) and is an active ROC Advisory Committee Member. Together these organizations attempt to protect Arizona homeowners. Please read the ROC Storm Chaser alert and ROC Scam Advisory. |

"This was, by far, the best experience we have ever had with any contractor. . . .Everyone at Lyons Roofing was professional and courteous. The product promised to us as well as promised communications and updates were all delivered upon. Dan and Mike both called when we were told they would. I am almost speechless as everything that was promised was delivered in a way that exceeded our expectations by A LOT. The crew, led by Daniel May covered our entire pool for the tear off! I think the area around our house was cleaner after the crew left!I am sure you get this a lot but Lyon's Roofing is literally the best contractor experience we have ever had. You have restored our faith in contracting!!!
THANK YOU!
The recent storms showed the value of your quality and workmanship as my wife and I felt (during the storm) that the house may blow down but the roof is solid!"
Thank you Joel for the confidence you placed in us and your time to let us know.
