Lets face it, the recession has been stressful on everybody, and budget constraints, well, we've all felt the pinch.  What about time and energy to plan a family getaway this year? It may seem like a daunting task; but you NEED A BREAK!  Don't fret, your staycation is no further than your front door, or a drive across town. If planned properly it can be as relaxing and rewarding as a trip to the islands!

Many people and families are finding a week at home, or in a local resort is all they may need to rejuvenate and feel like you had a real summer vacation.

Stay at Home
For you stay at home types creativity and maybe a little sprucing up of your backyard is all you many need.   Some ideas may be;

  • Plan your vacation as if you were going somewhere you've never been.  Look on the Travel Channel, Fodors, or AAA for ideas and points of interest.
  • Turn off the phones and computers.
  • Don't have a schedule - wing it and don't overbook.
  • Plan on splurging on eating out at new places.
  • Play hometown tourist at places you've never been.
  • Camp out in your backyard.
  • Hide from your neighbors.
  • Send postcards.

Buddy's Going to Bali

Tropic Bound Doggies
Summertime is here and vacation plans are in full swing.  But what about Buddy?  Does he get to go to grandma's house while your gone?  Or, Is there vacation in his summer plans with you? With more and more attention on pet service, yes, hotels, restaurants, airlines, etc., there are finally options which allow you to take the 4-legged kids along.  Here are a few very helpful tips and resources.

  1. Find out well in advance what and if your destination accommodates pets.  Find out fees, rules, required documents you may need such as immunization records, etc.  Also find out about pet sitting services that may be offered for that night out on the town.
  2. Prepare what you may need to ease traveling, especially if your pooch is easily excitable or anxious.  Whether by car or air there are natural remedies as well as sedatives your vet can prescribe to make getting him there more enjoyable for you.
  3. If a road trip is your mode of getting there make sure you have sturdy and convenient travel dishes for food and water, leash, carrier and tags with your cell phone number,
Your home number will do you no good when you are out of town.
If you go by air check the airlines record with pet areas in cargo and if they are pressurized, properly ventilated, taken out on layovers, and adequately cooled. If you have little ones, usually under 15-20 lbs. you may be able to bring them in the cabin with you for a small fee.  Make sure this is pre-arranged, often they only allow 1 pet in the cabin per flight. BEST OPTION: Pet Airways is just that, a carrier for pets!
