Going Green is Red Hot in the Desert
We are bombarded by the term 'going green', which encompasses a huge amount of 'movements'. There is recycling, solar, vegetative roof systems, sustainability, fuel efficiency, environmental, human footprint, etc., etc., etc.
Simply put, going green is an effort to reduce the impact we have on our future, and the future of our planet. Whether you are a cheerleader, sit on the sidelines, or a naysayer, it's happening all around us. It is social and political and will continue to become more and more a part of our everyday lives.
On the roofing end, there are a few things you can do which will help contribute to going green. Most of which will cost little to nothing extra.
1. Ventilation - Proper ventilation will not only protect your manufacturers warranty, but will also help you reduce your cooling bills in the summer. Keep in mind for each 300 sq. ft. of attic space you have you should have an equal amount of intake and exhaust totalling 100 sq. ft. If you have solar venting you will need about 1/3 less ventilation.
2. Flat Roofs - Low slope (flat) roofs have a distinct advantage in that polyurethane foam is inherently insulative, and is white or light colored. Clients switching from a dark rolled on, or rolled modified roof material to foam boast of significant energy savings immediately and more comfort.
3. Pitched Roofs - Many steep slope roofing products now are energy star rated. You don't have to choose a white material to reduce heat. Product manufacturers are all working to increase both the solar reflectivity and thermal emittance of the materials used.
4. Solar Products - Although the rebates are slowing down solar products continue to gain momentum. The long term benefits for your home, family and the environment can far outweigh the initial investment you make. With 'solar fever' high here in Arizona make sure you work with a reliable solar company who has been, and will be here for the long term.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Assure your roof is in good enough shape to prevent having to pay to remove your solar system to install or repair your roof in the short run. And make sure you or your solar vendor have a licensed roofing contractor to protect your roof from the penetrations made for your solar installation.
In addition to helping the environment, you also help your wallet. Any of the above suggestions will likely reduce your energy consumption, reducing your monthly costs, and extending the life of your cooling equipment.
Here at Lyons Roofing are concerned about the impact we have as a construction company, and provider of services. We are committed to find and offer new ways to reduce the impact we have on our community, and help you do the same. |

Fido Goes Green
Clearly you know by now I (the author of the E-Den) am a pet lover, and even I found some of the following pretty 'interesting'! Staying with the theme though I thought I would share both the feasible and not so. Enjoy.
Eco Friendly Dog beds made of recycled materials and other environmentally products at Worldwise.
Cat Genie and Doggie Septic systems allow you to flush waste or fertilize your garden. Visit Cat Genie or Doggie Dooley Toilet? Maybe this isn't such a bad idea!
Natural pet care and cleaning products and recycled toys and goods.
Have pets spayed or neutered. Pet overpopulation takes up valuable resources and contributes to pollution.
Adopt pets from a shelter. Those who want a specific breed can find just what they're looking for at a breed rescue. Do not support breeders or pet stores that get their dogs from puppy mills.
Pick up after the dog, using paper or biodegradable poop bags. Never use plastic which does not break down in the landfill.
Feed dogs organic pet food that is free of hormones and chemicals that may be toxic to the canine body.
Recycle household materials for bedding. Some of the family's old blankets or towels work well as do old pillow slips stuffed with foam packaging peanuts.
Pay attention to packaging of pet items. Recycled, biodegradable, or none is best.
Ask the veterinarian about natural parasite preventative products.
Recycle old socks and pieces of rope and make dog toys.
Use natural items like baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, or natural biodegradable soaps to clean up dog messes.
