Batten Down the Hatches!
All indications point to El Nino strengthening and a wetter than normal winter in the Southwest. After a very dry year we may have a false sense of security and be in for a surprise.
Leaks may have not appeared yet this year but the dry weather, and hotter than normal temperatures we are still wreaking havoc on our roofs. Preparing for the coming rains is essential. After the hot dry summer roof leaks may be more serious before you even know you have one.
Paying attention to your roof, and other parts of your home are essential to prevent drips before they start. Clogged gutters can cause roof leaks to begin. Also keep in mind that leaks can be caused by a number of different items such as;
- Stucco cracks
- Window and door seams
- Vents and other roof penetrations from blowing wind and rain.
And don't neglect the trees. Trimming trees now may prevent serious damage from falling trees and branches during a storm.
Roof maintenance is always best before the rain sets in, especially because roofing companies are swamped after a storm. Having a roof cleaning and inspection semi-annually is recommended, but how many realistically do that?
Some simple tips to keep in mind;
- Never get on a roof during a storm, especially if there is lightning in the sky.
- Always check references and licensing of anyone you will be contracting with - Storm Chasers may be cheap, but not your best bet, unless you like a gamble.
- Don't forget to check insurances - ask for a copy of the insurance certificate.
- Remember the old addage - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
If you do have a leak during the rain and it is around a light fixture first shut the light off. If it is coming through the ceiling you can release pressure and further damage by poking a pencil size hole in the ceiling to allow the water a release. Pressure buildup could collapse the ceiling. The longer you wait the more damage you could have.
Most companies receive upwards of 10 times + more calls after a good rain. Waiting to get someone out to your home could take much longer than you would like. Here's to keeping Arizona water tight, one Lyons Roof at a time!

Daisy is Giving Thanks
Daisy walked up into the yard of Miranda and Roy, two of our employees, and sat on the front porch. She watched Roy work until he was done and would not leave. Flyers went up but nobody claimed her.
Daisy now has a loving home and Kaden,
a 2 year old human brother.
Thank you Miranda and Roy!
