El Nino Winter
Forecasts Wetter than Normal Winter
We hear it's an El Nino, or La Nina year, but what does it really mean?
These cycles of Equatorial Pacific Ocean weather changes happen approximately every 3-8 years. They are generally unpredictable. El Nino is associated with warmer ocean currents, air pressure changes causing higher temperatures and increased percipitation. Conversely, La Nina is the opposite with colder temperatures and drought.
NOAA (The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) reports that since 1948 there have been 10 El Nino years, 11 La Nina years and 38 neutral years in weather patterns.
This year predictions are that El Nino will produce wetter than average percipitation in the Phoenix Metro area.
