There is increasing evidence that oxaloacetate may be especially effective in protecting neural tissues. Already shown to be a powerful anti-oxidant and to increase lifespan in the laboratory, oxaloacetate is being investigated to stop neurological damage from closed head injury, stroke, epilepsy and now, in a very recent paper, diabetes.
In a recent paper by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania (June 15, 2011), oxaloacetate was shown to provide protection to diabetic animals:
"Hyperglycemia, diabetes and even early pre-diabetic insulin resistance are associated with increased levels of amino acids, including the neurotoxic glutamate, in the circulation....neuroprotective effects were found after administration of the glutamate scavenger oxaloacetate..."
In addition, the paper notes that "Hyperglycemia is associated with increased infarct size, as well as with a ~3-fold higher risk of death and survivors have more profound neurologic deficits and disability"
The protection afforded by oxaloacetate on infarct size was an astonishing 50% reduction as compared to the control group. The results were statistically significant. (The abstract on this paper can be found by clicking here )
It has been previously shown that oxaloacetate works directly on preserving the DNA of the mitochondria in neuronal tissues. Researchers that used Kianic Acid to simulate an epileptic seizure in rats showed that injections of oxaloacetate completely protected the mitochondrial DNA and prevented the animals from going into seizure. Clinical trials are already underway for using injected oxaloacetate treatment forstroke and epilepsy. The finding that oxaloacetate is protective of the complications seen in diabetic animals is very new and exciting, and supports research by our group and others for using oral oxaloacetate supplementation to support proper glucose system functioning.
benaGene brand oxaloacetate provides 100 times the normal amount of oxaloacetate that is received in a typical diet. Supplementation with this natural human metabolite provides a mechanism to positively modify enzyme response to mimic a calorie restricted metabolic state.
