There is increasing evidence that oxaloacetate may be especially effective in protecting neural tissues.  Already shown to be a powerful anti-oxidant and to increase lifespan in the laboratory, oxaloacetate is being investigated to stop neurological damage from closed head injury, stroke, epilepsy and now, in a very recent paper, diabetes. 

In a recent paper by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania (June 15, 2011), oxaloacetate was shown to provide protection to diabetic animals:

In addition, the paper notes that "Hyperglycemia is associated with increased infarct size, as well as with a ~3-fold higher risk of death and survivors have more profound neurologic deficits and disability"

It has been previously shown that oxaloacetate works directly on preserving the DNA of the mitochondria in neuronal tissues.  Researchers that used Kianic Acid to simulate an epileptic seizure in rats showed that injections of oxaloacetate completely protected the mitochondrial DNA and prevented the animals from going into seizure.
