Neuroprotective Effects of Oxaloacetate Identified

Calorie Restriction has been shown to have many benefits, including neurological protection. Our published work in 2009 showed that oxaloacetate, a human metabolite in the Krebs cycle, can work as a calorie restriction mimetic. A summary of this work is discussed in our Aging CELL paper referenced below.
As research on this natural compound continues, we have seen several papers that now show that oxaloacetate is protective of brain tissue after severe trauma.
Rats that were subjected to closed-head injury showed significant improvement in neurological severity scores (P<0.001) after 24 hours and 48 hours when treated with oxaloacetate. The authors suggest that this is due to the ability of oxaloacetate to scavenge excess glutamate. See
You may be familiar with glutamate as the food flavoring agent Monosodium Glutamate (MSG). Excess glutamate has been implicated in epileptic seizures, stroke, and diseases such as Alzheimer's, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and autism.
