What's on Your Plate? is a witty and provocative documentary about kids and food politics. Over the course of one year, the film follows two eleven-year-old multiracial girls from New York City as they explore their place in the food chain. Sadie and Safiyah talk to food activists, farmers, and storekeepers, while addressing questions about the origin of the food they eat, how it's cultivated, and how many miles it travels from farm to fork. Sadie and Safiyah formulate sophisticated and compassionate opinions about urban sustainability, and by doing so inspire hope and active engagement in others.

The consumer DVD release of What's on Your Plate? comes at a time when the U.S. is witnessing a nationwide effort to improve the quality of school lunch programs and focus on the health of America's youth, spearheaded by diverse initiatives such as First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign and T.V. chef Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution. What's on Your Plate? successfully weaves the many threads of the issue - from nutrition and food choices to the local food movement to exercise and child health - into a program ideal for families to watch and discuss together. DVD features such as SDH captioning and Spanish language subtitles serve to increase the film's accessibility.

Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan praised the film, saying "Congratulations, Sadie and Safiyah! It is great to have you take us through the food cycle. As somebody said: 'You are what you eat.' Thank you for helping us get it right. You will definitely capture the imagination of your peers and generations beyond."
