Greetings!

Weary.

It was a friend's facebook status. Simple but it spoke to me, "weary today but pressing on".

We all know what that feels like. Elijah did too.

Remember this story?

1When Ahab got home, he told Jezebel what Elijah had done and that he had slaughtered the prophets of Baal. 2So Jezebel sent this message to Elijah: "May the gods also kill me if by this time tomorrow I have failed to take your life like those whom you killed."

3Elijah was afraid and fled for his life. He went to Beersheba, a town in Judah, and he left his servant there. 4Then he went on alone into the desert, traveling all day. He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die. "I have had enough, LORD," he said. "Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors."

Note these details in the story.

  • He was afraid.
  • He went alone.
  • He traveled all day.
  • He confessed he "had enough".

Those are all red flags of warning.

  • He was emotionally spent.
  • He was relationally isolated.
  • He was physically overdone.
  • He was spiritually dry.

This week I want us to spend some time with Elijah to learn through his experience how we might better cope when we are spent.

For today, let me just point out that in those few verses, there is really only one thing that Elijah did right.

He prayed. He honestly and openly told God exactly where he was in the journey of life. He didn't try to sugarcoat it. He didn't try to spiritualize it. He just confessed to God right where he was, "I have had enough".

Do you relate to Elijah? Make sure you open up and confess honestly where you are in the journey. More to come ...
