Get your directions right
A guy by the name of Bishop Fulton Sheen was the first nationally recognized, "Television Preacher" in America. His messages were heard coast to coast. As a result of this he was a highly sought after speaker both for religious and civic organizations.
A contemporary legend about the Bishop recalls that he directionally challenged. (He got lost a lot).
The story goes that one time while he was speaking in a city where he had never been before, he left the hotel to walk a short distance to the City Hall where he would be speaking. But in the course of that very short walk, be became turned around and found himself completely lost.
With time being short he saw some boys on the sidewalk and asked them hot to get to his destination. The boys immediately knew the place and gave him directions, "You just go down this street for two more blocks, take a left, go straight for one block, take a right and the City Hall will be right in front of you. You can't miss it!"
The Bishop thanked the boys for the directions and started to walk away. As he was leaving, one of the boys said, "What are you going to do there?" The Bishop replied, "I'm giving a speech." The boy asked further, "What is the speech about?" The Bishop replied, "I'm going to tell people how to go to heaven. Would you want to come with me?"
The boy replied, "No thanks. You don't even know how to get to City Hall! How would ever find Heaven?"
I suppose one of our most frequent prayers has to do with directions. Which way am I supposed to go? Should I do this, or that? Do I stay here or make the move?
What directions are you considering today?
I remember as a Senior in High School, I attended a conference in which a speak correctly assessed: "Many of you are considering what you are going to do for the rest of your life, and you locked in a struggle between two things. Will I do this or will I do that? But some of you in that struggle have never stopped to ask the Lord, 'What do you want me to do with my life?' If you want to know the way you should go, ask Him."
I did. And that night for the first time I experienced God's call into the pastoral ministry.
Where are you struggling today? Are you praying about it? Are you asking God for His leadership? If you will come to Him with an open heart and a desire to do that which He wants you to do, He will show you the way. Get your directions ... from the right source for the right way.
