With Labor Day behind us, we're all pretty much settled into our school routine - early bedtimes, daily lessons, homework, school supplies. But how about the supplies that will keep your kids' minds as sharp as possible throughout the day? What are the best foods that will feed our brains to enhance learning?
Here are a few tips from nutritionalist Keri Glassman:
- Numerous studies show children who start their day with a healthy breakfast do better academically and have fewer behavior problems.
- Whole grains and protein are digested more slowly, providing a sustained source of energy for body and mind. Blood sugar remains stable. Foods made of refined sugars (soft drinks, packaged cookies, white bread, etc.) set kids up for a sugar high (rush), followed by a crash.
- DHA/Omega-3s are important for brain development and function. DHA is found in gray brain matter, brain cell membranes, and is important for brain cell development.
Wishing you blessings for the best school year ever.

With the start of the school year comes daily homework and the struggle to get your kids to study after a long day at school. Spelling City is a great way to make studying for the weekly spelling tests fun for students and pain-free for parents.
All parents and students can use Spelling City. Teachers can also sign up to save their weekly spelling lists for students to practice at home. Younger children can practice spelling their names and the names of family members. Spelling City is free, but you can purchase a license which will track the students' progress over time. Finally, a fun way to learn those spelling words! |

Unplugged Pick of the Week |
As we have mentioned before, here at eLearningK12 we believe the last hour of the day, just before bedtime, should be a time of peace and relaxation in the home, giving a smooth transition from the hectic day to a restful night. In each issue of InBox Learning, we'll present an unplugged, non-electronic activity you can enjoy as a family during this hour.
Traditionally, we begin each school year with the most classic and loved board game - checkers! Checkers is a cross-generational board game everyone in your family can play. You've probably got a checkers game at home already. If you need a refresher on how to play, visit Tutorial.com's Learn2Play Checkers for instructions and tips to make your own set if you don't have one. Checkers is an all-time favorite among eLearningK12 students. We hope your family enjoys checkers during your new unplugged hour before bedtime! |
