As we just wrapped up another annual Pet Day at eLearningk12, I was again amazed at the joy and pride expressed in the children's faces as they shared their pets with us. It is remarkably similar to the joy and pride parents take in their newborn children.
I recently ran across a study which suggests that having a friendly cat or dog around the house can do a lot more than provide a little fun and enjoyment for children. Robert Poresky, a renowned sociologist at Kansas State University, believes that a pet can also boost a child's learning, teach empathy and responsibility, and raise overall IQ scores.

This week we have two wonderful web sites to explore with your children: Dogster.com and Catster.com. Both sites are loaded with information on pet parenting, various breeds, and even online games. You can even upload photos of your pet and enter contests to win prizes! Both sites also have ads for various pet items, but you can ignore them and just enjoy the content of the site. Will your pet's photo win the contest this week? Let us know! |

Unplugged Pick of the Week |
This week, let's take advantage of the cooler evening temperatures, and play outdoor games in the dark! Bring out the flashlights and play flashlight tag. (Need a refresher on how to play? Visit eHow.) Playing hide and seek in the dark brings a whole new dimension to the game! Studies show that playing with trusted adults in the dark can help children overcome a fear of the dark. For even more fun in the dark, invite your neighbors to join you. The children will take delight in tagging the slower moving adults, and the more people involved, the more fun everyone has.
