Does Your Child Have Good Manners?

TatumHow can you tell if your child has good manners?  You might want to ask their pediatrician! Dr. Perri Klass, a pediatrician and a columnist for The New York Times, points out that manners - also called "social skills" - are crucial. In fact, the ability to get along with others and act mannerly improves a child's success in the neighborhood, in the classroom, in the workplace, and in life. Pediatricians get an up close and personal look at how a kid's manners are - or aren't - developing. Dr. Klass points out that a baby comes into the world thinking only about his own needs and comforts. It's a parent's job to lovingly teach them that there are other people in the world and that those people have feelings.

 Unplugged Pick of the Week

hands planting a seedlingHere is an activity your children will fondly remember and pass on to their own children one day.  Get out in the yard and plant a sunflower house!  Clear a rectangle shaped patch of land and plant sunflower seeds around the perimeter, leaving space for an entrance.  When the sunflower seeds have sprouted and are about a foot tall, plant sweet pea seeds between them.  As the sweet peas sprout, train the tendrils around the sunflower stalks.  Don't forget to water your sunflower garden! Once the sunflowers are taller than your children, use string to tie opposite stalks together, forming a roof.  Your children will have a shady, fragrant place to play all summer!  You can also harvest and roast the seeds for a tasty snack.

Don't have a yard?  Purchase a pack of sunflower seeds,  soil and flowersunflowers pots and plant the seeds on your deck or patio.  Your children will love planting and caring for the sunflowers, and they will be amazed at how quickly they grow.  Sunflowers come in many colors, from deep red to flaming orange, as well as the familiar yellow. Some varieties will grow taller than your house!
