Does your child have Nature Deficit Disorder? |
With the onset of Daylight Savings Time this past weekend, it's a good time to think about how important it is for all of us, especially kids, to spend unstructured time outdoors each day.
It seems that our kids today are not enjoying the benefits we had as children, the simple things we took for granted - climbing trees, playing tag, hide-and seek, and sandlot baseball, and making clover necklaces. It is called "nature deficit disorder," and according to a growing number of researchers, millions of children across the country are suffering from it. According to research, 70 percent of adults had their biggest childhood adventures in outdoor spaces among trees, rivers, and woods, compared with only 29 percent of children today. Click here to read more from eLearningK12 on the cure for Nature Deficit Disorder. |

In keeping with the theme of curing Nature Deficit Disorder in families everywhere, this week's web pick is the Virtual Kite Zoo, which has simple instructions for many different kites, from simple ones made from one sheet of paper, to simply spectacular models you can do as a family project. Will anyone tackle the Circoflex? We'd love to see pictures of you flying your kites!

Unplugged Pick of the Week |
After reading the above two articles, you are probably not surprised that this week's unplugged pick is ... kite flying! This is the perfect time of year to fly a kite, as it is often windy but lovely weather. Use the instructions above to create your own, or purchase a kite at any store, and head out to a park or vacant lot near you for an afternoon of fun. You will be amazed at how much family communication will take place while you are all looking up at your kites! I can hear Bert and Mr. Banks from Mary Poppins now...
Oh, oh, oh! Let's go fly a kite Up to the highest height! Let's go fly a kite and send it soaring Up through the atmosphere Up where the air is clear Oh, let's go fly a kite!
