Do we really need grade levels? |
Did you happen to see the Fox News presentation last week about a radical change in the Adams 50 School District in Westminster, Colorado? It seems they made a decision to do away with grade levels and traditional grades in an effort to improve the quality of education for their students. Click here to read more from eLearningK12 on this radical education reform effort. |

This week, we are featuring a long-time favorite of our students, Draw and Color with Uncle Fred. Uncle Fred teaches kids to draw and color cartoon figures. It is so much fun that I caught myself drawing one while writing this newsletter! Have fun drawing and coloring with Uncle Fred!

Unplugged Pick of the Week |
According to ChampionshipChess.net, chess is a learning tool that just happens to be a game. Studies conducted over the alst 30 years show that students' IQs increase and test scores improve after less than a year of systematic chess study.
Chess is fun and motivational, turning problem-solving into a game. It is also a thinking game, encouraging students to use patterns and logical deductive reasoning to solve problems. Chess develops and improves memory and concentration as well as the capacity to predict consequences.
We'll be playing chess at our learning centers for the next couple of weeks, culminating in a chess tournament, an event students look forward to each year. The photo above is from last year's tournament. If you'd like to brush up on the rules or teach your kids how to play, visit ChessKids.com for a kid-friendly introduction to the game and a series of lessons on game play and strategy. Be sure to check each issue of InBox Learning for the date of our chess tournament. You are welcome to join us and see our students in action.
In each issue of InBox Learning, we present an unplugged, non-electronic activity you can enjoy as a family during the last hour of the day, just before bedtime. Here at eLearningK12 we believe this hour should be a time of peace and relaxation in the home, giving a smooth transition from the hectic day to a restful night. |
