Are We Teaching Reading Too Early? |
There has been much talk in recent years about when to begin teaching reading to our young students. No doubt you can find among your friends the "early starters" and the "late starters". The early starters have read books about how to teach their baby to read. They have labels on furniture and appliances, and their toddler plays with word cards every day. The late starters are more relaxed. They read to their children. They teach them to cook and garden and help fix the car. And they won't be upset if a child doesn't show a desire to read until much later than his peers.
So which of your friends is right?

Can you locate all 50 states on a blank map of the US? Can your children? Challenge them to a game of Know Your States for a stimulating geography game for all ages. Can you get all 50 correct? I'm embarrassed to admit I did not get them all right at first, but I am getting better with practice! Email me at ntoups@elearningk12.com to tell me your best score.

Unplugged Pick of the Week |
Studies have shown that students who play chess do better in math and science in school and on standardized tests. However, chess can be intimidating if you don't know how to play. Tic Tac Chec to the rescue! Tic Tac Chec is a very quick, simple game which teaches how the various chess pieces move. After mastering the moves, you can move on to a full chess board with confidence. Even accomplished chess players can enjoy a quick game to sharpen their skills. Tic Tac Chec is available at many online game stores, such as Mindware. You can also make your own board and use the chess pieces from your own chess set.
To make your own set, choose the following pieces from your chess set: one pawn, rook, knight and bishop of each color. You can create a 4 X 4 grid on paper, use 1/4 of your chess board, or photocopy your chess board and cut a 4 X 4 grid from the copy. View the simple rules of Tic Tac Chec and you are on your way to playing a fast and fun introduction to chess.
In each issue of InBox Learning, we present an unplugged, non-electronic activity you can enjoy as a family during the last hour of the day, just before bedtime. Here at eLearningK12 we believe this hour should be a time of peace and relaxation in the home, giving a smooth transition from the hectic day to a restful night. |
