The Secret to Developing Smarter Kids |
The Secret...It's About Effort!
More than three decades of scientific research suggests that repeatedly telling children that they are especially smart or talented leaves them vulnerable to failure, and fearful of challenges, according to Dr. Joseph Mercola. Children raised this way develop an implicit belief that intelligence is innate and fixed, making striving to learn seem less important. Challenges and mistakes become threats to their ego rather than opportunities to improve.
However, teaching children to have a "growth mind-set," which encourages effort and self-improvement rather than focusing on intelligence or talent, helps make them into high achievers in school and in life.

This week's web pick is Tumble Books and Tumble Readables, online books and audio books for students from pre-K through 12th grade. Both are available for free from both the Lafourche Parish Public Library and the Terrebonne Parish Public Library.
Tumble Books are online audio books, including many of the books assigned to kids and teens in school. Tumble Readables are online versions, or ebooks, also of many popularly assigned novels. Both are great resources for struggling readers, or anyone who does not want to purchase the required reading for their child's classes. Both Lafourche and Terrebonne libraries offer them free on their web site, but they may ask for your library card number. If you don't have a library card, you can get a free trial at tumblebooks.com. Or you could get a library card and enjoy all the resources available at your public library! |

Unplugged Pick of the Week |
In each issue of InBox Learning, we present an unplugged, non-electronic activity you can enjoy as a family during the last hour of the day, just before bedtime.
Here at eLearningK12 we believe this hour should be a time of peace and relaxation in the home, giving a smooth transition from the hectic day to a restful night.
Pick up sticks is a game that can be enjoyable at any age. Grandparents in particular enjoy teaching this game to their grandchildren. If you need a refresher on how to play, visit eHow's How to Play Pick Up Sticks.
Here at eLearningK12, we change the point values of the different colored sticks to money values, so kids get lots of practice counting money. Here is our point value system, if you'd like to use it:
Black=50 points
Blue=25 points
Green=10 points
Red=5 points
Yellow=1 point
Have fun playing pick up sticks, and remember, don't let the sticks move! |
