I am starting to help an aging relative.

Who are you?
You have been helping an aging relative for a short time. Your duties range from errand-running and bill-paying to hands-on care.

Your keyword: Find
Find services that help. Find support that comforts. Find ways to enjoy your hobbies and interests.

Your purpose:
This is your entry into the caregiving role. This is your time to experiment, to get your feet wet and see what works. This is your opportunity to learn how the health care industry works with, or in some cases, against, you.
  1. Learn as much as you can about your care recipient's illness, disease or condition.
  2. Learn how to provide proper care from health care professionals or from health care videos, manuals or books.
  3. Join a support group-online or in your community.

Prevent Dehydration
Now!

dehydrationOne of the top 5 reasons for hospitalization of the elderly is an apparently simple yet very dangerous, and potentially fatal, condition. Dehydration is a very serious condition, more than most people realize.  And it is largely preventable.

The warm days of summer and early fall are the most obvious times to be alert for dehydration problems, but overheated rooms in the cooler weather can also present a problem. Most times, paying attention to simple dietary measures and looking out for early warning signs can easily prevent dehydration.

New Changes In Medigap Coverage
People buying Medicare Supplement Insurance (commonly known as medigap) will have different options starting on June 1, 2010. If you already have a medigap policy you can keep that same policy and its benefits will not change.

Medigap provides a way for people enrolled in the traditional Medicare program to buy private insurance to cover some of Medicare's out-of-pocket costs (such as co pays for doctors visits) and a few extra benefits (such as coverage for medical emergencies overseas), depending on the kind of policy chosen.

Thrifty Ideas
We asked how you pinch pennies these days, and you responded with a thousand suggestions. Our pick of the lot could save you thousands of dollars.

Drive a search engine.
"I am very fond of Google Product Search, which lets you sort the results from low price to high. And I have always saved a ton of money by buying on eBay."
-Teri Beahm, TX

Split the bills.
"My husband and I don't generate a lot of trash, so we split the garbage-collection bill with a neighbor."
-Debra Larrison, IN

Split the pills.
"I have my doctor prescribe a double-strength dose of my pills, and then I cut them in half. That's one co pay for twice the medicine."
-Elmont Hollingsworth, Mount Pleasant, IA

Put the work in workout.
"I figure I save $40 a week by mowing my half-acre yard myself, $125 a week by cleaning house, and $175 a month grooming my four dogs. Plus, doing all these chores keeps me so active, there's no need to join a gym!"
-Bev Nord, Round Rock, TX

Facilities & Agencies We Love

We are privileged to have received referrals from, and be able to coordinate care with, many Assisted Living facilities and rehab facilities. Our growth is in large part due to the trust the staff in these organizations have put in our staff and our agency more generally. Likewise, we trust in these facilities and their staffs, and we are committed to referring them on a regular basis.
