Caregiver of the Month: Connie Addai-Mireku
Connie has done an amazing job with our client, JC. In January, JC was
discharged to live with his son's family in Southbury following a brief
rehab stay. He was totally dependent for most ADLs, required a Hoyer
lift for transfer and was incontinent. He also had very limited
ambulation and required a pureed diet due to swallowing difficulties.
Connie
collaborated with Masonicare Home Care nurses and therapists over the
course of several months, and JC has made remarkable progress. He is
now walking well with a walker, eating a regular diet and enjoying
walks outside with Connie. He is transferring well and is back to his
old self.
Connie has fit in with tremendously well with JC's
family, which includes his son and daughter-in-law, and their 4 busy
and talented children. Very soon Connie and JC will be moving to
Kensington Green, where JC will be able to enjoy meals with Connie in
the dining room, participate in all the activities there and receive
regular visits from Casey, our pet therapy dog.
The staff at
Kensington are thrilled to have JC back. Between Connie and the
outstanding staff at Kensington, we are certain Jack will receive the
best care possible.
Thanks to Connie, one of our wonderful
live-in caregivers, for her attentive, compassionate and competent
care. Her easy manner, gentle persistence and positive attitude helped
to makes a tremendous contribution to our client's quality of life.

Featured Article: Nutrition and The Elderly
We must do our part! Proper nutrition and good eating habits are very important aspects of for elderly folks. We are in a perfect position to improve our clients' nutrition and keep them healthy.
DID YOU KNOW?? Elderly folks need slightly FEWER CALORIES than younger folks, but MORE vitamin D and all three B vitamins.
Sufficient daily fiber intake is important, not just because of helping the bowels function, but to provide nutrients to friendly bacteria in the digestive tracts. Sufficient fiber for proper bowel function and healthy digestion is 25-30 grams of fiber daily. Natural fiber is always better than laxatives. For a list of fiber-rich foods, click here.

In Loving Memoriam - Always There Family and Friends...
Michael Dugan, husband of our wonderful Senior Caregiver, Mary Roth. Mike had been a hospice patient and a client of Always There.
Read Michael's Obituary.
Memorial contributions in Michael's name may be made to Masonicare Hospice, 33 North Plains Industrial Road, Wallingford, CT 06492 or to Alpine Rescue Team, PO Box 934, Evergreen, CO 80437.
Mary Asselta, was one of our very first clients - a referral from Kensington Green, one of our favorite assisted living facilities. We cared for her every day from early March 2008 to the day she was transferred to a New Hampshire nursing home on July 14, 2009, accompanied by our caregivers Mary Roth and Dawn Reed. Mary enjoyed a wonderful 90th birthday party at her new nursing home in NH, with her AT caregivers and her new ones all attending. Sadly Mary contracted pneumonia two weeks later and died in a NH hospital. Regina attended the wake and funeral mass and service in New Hampshire. She was touched by the outpouring of love by friends and family, especially by Joe, Mary's devoted nephew and POA. Joe stood by Mary's casket, talking to her and holding her hand while we all said goodbye. A loving and heartbreaking moment. We all wish Mary a happy eternal life with her beloved husband, Danny. We extend special thanks to the ATHC caregivers who made Mary's time happy, comfortable, safe and full of love.
