Miller's Tale

The distraction of our busiest season has been a bit of a reprieve from the ongoing temporary repairs of the flood.  There is still a lot of work to be done on the spillways and earthen dam before the winter's onslaught.

Reflecting on the past few months, the volume of work seems daunting, but I feel very blessed to have dedicated neighbors, employees, family and friends.  In just one and a half weeks time, I was amazed at what we were able to accomplish before the Summer Festival in July.  After being forced to cancel the Spring Festival in May, we found ourselves waiting for engineers and construction companies to begin work to re-open Old Usquepaugh Road and bridge.  Once the road work began, we were finally allowed to begin moving forward with our repairs after the construction company ended their day.  I started working alone with my tractor after an already hard day's work.  It wasn't long until neighbors and friends joined in my efforts.  As always, in a time of need, John Bradley, owner of JGB III Landscape and his crew began working immediately.  They spent many late nights moving soil, replacing over 500 yards of fill, excavating beautiful cut stones and laying sod under tractor lights.  After speaking with contractors who believed it was unlikely for us to complete our goal, I even began to wonder if it was possible.  Thanks to my son, Kevin and his friends, Chris and Drew's youthful energy, over 300 sandbags were filled to elevate the level of the river and 40 rolls of turf donated by Peter Gavitt of Turf Inc. were installed just two days before the festival.  John Rocchio Corporation worked overtime to make sure the road would be open for the event.  Seventeen hours to spare...job well done!

Sincerely,
Paul Drumm III
