Happenings at the Mill

Kenyon's Grist MillKenyon's has been involved in many projects throughout the past few months.  As we are coming to a close in our fair season, we are in the midst of completing various onsite programs that will continue to make our mill shine.  C.D. Kenyon, a descendant of one of the mill's original owners, took on the task of restoration on our earthen dam that has suffered from years of erosion.  It it is now safe and secure.  With the help of local Native Americans, the Spears Family, one of our mill's spillways has been refurbished as well. Both projects look fabulous...a warm thank you!

Reconstruction of our gift shop has been underway and will be re-opening in the spring 2009.  It will feature a full line of Kenyon's products, as well as locally made crafts and various cooking items, all of which will be offered on our website under Our Store.  Other upgrades on our website have been underway, including our About Us section with photos and faces of our team.  In the coming months, keep a close eye on our website, www.kenyonsgristmill.com for next year's tour schedules and our Spring Kick-Off Open House!

Visit Us At The Big E!

The Big E 2008September 12 -28: The Eastern State Exposition, also known as "The Big E", is a 17-day annual fair located in West Springfield, MA.  This year marks fifty years for Kenyon's Grist Mill in the Rhode Island Building on the esteemed Avenue of States.  We will be serving Johnny Cakes, Clam Cakes, as well as New England and Rhode Island Clam Chowder featured in our bread bowls that are made with Kenyon's whole wheat flour.

Reflecting a New England Autumn tradition, this fair is the largest in the Northeast.  With hundreds of major exhibits, rides, concerts, entertainment, history, agriculture, animals, shopping, crafts, circus, parades, and not to mention...great food, it is an event that should not be missed!

Miller's Tale

I once read a story about a grist mill and site that was completely restored with the goal to uphold what a grist mill was in colonial society.  In an agricultural community of the past, farmers used to bring their grain to the mill to be ground.  They had no days off; they had no two week vacation.  The trip to the mill was a family day off.  After doing chores, and packing a lunch, they would load their grain and spend the day swimming in the pond at the mill and socializing with the millers while their grain was ground.  In which times, stories were shared, local news, skills and advise were offered.  This is what I want to accomplish at Kenyon's...a place where people can go...and share something.

As we continue to maintain and restore South County, Rhode Island's oldest operating business and the second in the state, I hope that the mill is a welcoming, friendly place with a special emphasis on tradition and education.  We strive to provide an experience that makes all Rhode Islanders proud of their heritage while welcoming and sharing that with our extended family as well.
