La Jolla Elementary School

Please Note These Safety Rules
Regarding Scooters, Skateboards, etc.

Dear Parents,

The teachers and I want to make sure that parents are aware of the rules surrounding scooters, skateboards, and razors. Under our Bicycle/Skateboard Policy, our parent handbook states that:

"Students in all grades may ride their bikes to school and store them in the available bike racks. Bikes must be equipped with locks and, by law, riders must have helmets. Students may not ride on campus. Bikes must be walked to and from the bike racks on school grounds. SKATEBOARDS, SCOOTERS, ROLLER BLADES, and ROLLER SNEAKERS, are not allowed on campus."

We have had many students bringing their razors, skateboards, and scooters to school. We believe our students are telling their parents that they can use the scooters on campus after school. This is not the case. The school is closed after school hours, except to groups who have rented the facility, e.g. softball. While we don't mind if parents come to school to supervise their children playing on the playground equipment, scooters, skateboards and bikes are not allowed. The signs on the gates surrounding the school say "NO Skateboarding or bikes" on campus.

These items are prohibited because it is dangerous to ride them on the steep ramps around campus, and because of the number of people on our campus. This is particularly true in the morning and after school when many people are walking in their path. There have been several near accidents in recent weeks.

Students who need to use scooters to come to and from school will require special permission to put their scooters in the bike rack. Students who use skateboards to come to and from school will need special permission, and will house their skateboards in the office.

Please also note that Zuca's are again being used to ride around campus, and for play (with students trying to collide into each others Zuca's). Students who ride or play with their Zuca around campus will not be allowed to bring the Zuca to campus for the remainder of the school year.

As always, thank you for your support and cooperation.
