TODD HUNTER NAMED TO CHAIR POWERFUL CALENDARS COMMITTEE

State Rep. Todd Hunter of Corpus Christi was named today to chair the powerful Calendars Committee by Speaker of the House Joe Straus. The appointment puts Hunter at the forefront of setting the legislative agenda for the Texas legislature. As chair of Calendars, Hunter will lead the committee designated to determine when and how legislation will be consider by Texas House members.

"I am pleased to appoint Rep. Hunter as chair of the House Committee on Calendars, which plays an integral role in shepherding critical

legislation through the House and Senate. I know that Todd will serve our body well in this role, while continuing to make many other significant contributions to the House in redistricting and other matters that are important to our state," Said Speaker Straus.

"I am pleased to appoint Rep. Hunter as chair of the House Committee on Calendars, which plays an integral role in

"Todd Hunter is going to be the traffic cop of any and all legislation - from both the Texas Senate and the Texas House - that comes to the floor for debate," said former Corpus Christi State Rep. Hugo Berlanga, who chaired the Calendars Committee during the 71st Legislative session in 1989. "There is no question that Todd and the Coastal Bend just got the biggest plum assignment for this legislative session."

Berlanga said the appointment shows the trust placed in Hunter by Speaker Straus and other members of the House leadership because he was chosen for one of the most demanding positions in the legislature.

Hunter was also named as a member of the Redistricting, Corrections , General Investigating and Ethics and Human Services committee. He will continue to serve as chair of the Select Committee on Elections.

"I am grateful for the confidence of Speaker Straus," said Rep. Hunter, "and will work to ensure that each piece of legislation receives fair and equitable consideration as we set the calendar for voting on the important issues facing the people of this state."

Rep. Hunter served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1989 to 1997 when he retired from public service. He served as chair of the Civil Practices Committee and as vice chair of the State Affairs Committee.

In 2008, Rep. Hunter was elected to represent District 32 which included Aransas, San Patricio, and Calhoun Counties, as well as part of Nueces County. During the 81st Legislative Session, Todd was named the Chairman of the Committee on Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence.

SecondVOTER IDENTIFICATION BILL PASSED OUT OF SENATE

The first bill of the 82nd Legislative Session has made its way out of the Texas Senate.  On January 25, 2011 Senate Bill (SB) 14 of the 82nd session (otherwise known as the "Voter Identification Bill") was heard by a Senate Committee of the Whole.  Rather than sending SB 14 to one of the Senate's eighteen standing committees, the Texas Senate instead chose to meet in a Committee of the Whole, with all thirty one Senators.  This allowed the Senate to hear public testimony before it would go to the Senate floor.  SB 14 received a favorable vote of 19 yeas and 11 nays in the Committee of the Whole.  read more...
