Workplace Wellness Programs:
Increasing Employee Participation

By Nan Maley, R.N.
Corporate Wellness Director, Sullivan Benefits

Unless employees in the workplace are interested in participating in workplace wellness programs, the addition of these programs to the health care benefit plan will not be effective in reducing corporate health care costs.

State-of-the-art fitness equipment only works when it is used, and exercise facilities are only beneficial when they are visited regularly by members and employees.  The same can be said for workplace wellness programs,
the key to an effective workplace wellness program is participation.

Save a Life!  Pass this On!

By Gary R. Goodhile, CLU
Co-Founder and Principal, Sullivan Benefits

I struggled with deciding on what I should write about this month, our friends in Washington and in the State house have certainly provided us with ample material.  In the end (no pun intended) I decided to write about a procedure (a Colonoscopy) that every individual over the age of 50 (sooner if you are at high risk / consult your doctor) should make it their business to have done and ASAP.  It is incumbent upon us as executives, business owners, HR, finance and benefits professionals to educate our employees and their family members on just why it is so important.  It is simply to expensive not to!

Here are some hard facts:

Ü Colorectal Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths

        (you may know of someone)

Ü 143,000 new cases are identified each year

Ü Over 51,000 people will die each year
Ü It is a very long and unpleasant way to die
Ü    It can be incredibly expensive
Ü The rate of preventive screenings nationally is only 57%

And Get This:  It is almost totally preventable when detected early!!
