Multinational Employee Benefits Pooling
(and why it could be important to your organization in 500 words or less)

If your organization has local national employees in overseas locations, there is a high likelihood you are providing private supplemental benefits (i.e., in addition to government mandated programs). Such benefits may include life, disability (income or lump sum), medical and retirement plans (defined benefit, or more common today, defined contribution plans). These benefit plans are typically covered by local insurance companies - not unlike here in the U.S. Since the 1960's a concept referred to as pooling has emerged as a prominent vehicle used by corporations to insure and help administer local employee benefit plans. Cigarette smoking wreaks havoc on today's business environment, and not just for the obvious reasons. According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 30 percent of employees (both full- and part-time) are smokers. But 100 percent of employees are affected by this habit.
Employee smoking increases employer costs. These include: health and life insurance costs and claims, lost productivity and absenteeism, maintenance costs, worker's compensation costs, property damage and the effects of secondhand smoke on nonsmokers. READ MORE |
