Chronic diseases, including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. They are pervasive, costly, and, in many cases, either preventable or manageable through the combined application of medical science and healthy lifestyles. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 133 million people - about half of all adult Americans - live with at least one chronic medical condition, and that chronic diseases account for 70 percent of all deaths and one-third of the years of potential life lost before age 65. Have you been to a pharmacy lately and been offered a discount? Well, if you haven't, you should inquire, as potential savings are available......... I recently had to refill a generic prescription for one of my family members, and now that I am enrolled in a consumer-driven high deductible health plan I have to pay the first $3,000 in our medical care costs. Consequently, I actually listened to my trusted pharmacist when he asked me if I wanted to join the Walgreen's Prescription Savings Club. Interestingly enough, I learned that the prescription that once cost a $15 copayment when we were on an HMO with drugs covered 100% after applicable copayments, now would only cost me $9.99 for a 30 day supply or $12 for a 90 day supply if I joined the discount program. There was also savings to be reaped with my AAA card, although it was not as beneficial on this prescription. In addition, I learned that by using the store discount program, I did not need to be concerned about my insurer's quality care dosing requirements and my family member could have the full prescription, which was a dosage slightly higher than FDA guidelines, without having to go through some extra steps - what a bonus! |
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) expands current COBRA rules and provides a nine month 65% federal COBRA premium subsidy for employees who were involuntarily terminated between Sept. 1, 2008 and Dec.31, 2009. Employers must implement new COBRA procedures, extend enrollment opportunities and create subsidy procedures promptly. See our February 20, 2009 Employer Alert for details.
