Jim shared this recipe with a few of us at the Language & Thinking Program last summer...it has been tested in IWT's tasting kitchen (who knew?) and really passes muster for a hot summer's day
Jim Keller's Sage and Lemon Scented Rose Wine
1 healthy-sized handful of sage leaves, thinly sliced
zest of 1 lemon
1 bottle of rose wine
1 small bottle of seltzer (if desired)
additional lemon zest or slices and sage for garnishing (if desired)
To an empty glass pitcher, add sliced sage leaves and zest of lemon. Muddle together for a minute to release aromatic oils. Add rose wine and cover. Chill wine for 24 hours. Before serving, strain out herbs and zest. NB: sage will turn a grey black color; this is a normal reaction and will not affect the taste at all. Garnish as desired with additional zest or slices of lemon or sage. Wine is particularly tasty if served as a spritzer over ice. Enjoy! |

| IWT Spring Newsletter vol. 1 no.1 June 2009 |
Greetings!
Welcome to the first edition of IWT's newsletter. We plan for it to be biannual, so look for another edition in the fall. For this our first, we feature only associates' news, but moving forward we hope workshop participants will contribute news, too--send to me at dorsey@bard.edu.
Here at Bard, we launched our new website in May, please visit it at www.writingandthinking.org-- there you can see photos and hear an audio clip from IWT's annual conference in April, "Beyond Blame: Authority, Creativity, and Plagiarism in the Digital Age," which saw a full house and thought-provoking dialogue in the workshops and plenary panel.
Our collection of associate-authored essays on IWT practices, Writing Based Teaching: Essential Practices and Enduring Questions, is forthcoming from SUNY press this fall. We are looking forward to a good week of workshops in July and thinking about topics for the one-day Writer as Reader workshop in November and the weekend workshops in December. And following the great response to Curriculum Conversation no. 1: The Great Gatsby this past March, we are thinking ahead to our next Conversation in March 2010-- please send us your thoughts and requests on potential texts.
In the meantime, after a deep, hard winter and cool, damp spring, many of us will be busy at work cultivating our gardens here in the beautiful Hudson Valley. With a glass of rose nearby.
Wishing a good summer to all,
Brigid Dorsey

Susan Behrens has several books and chapters in books forthcoming, including Grammar: A pocket guide for students (London: Routledge Press, anticipated 2011) and with Judith A. Parker, Language in the Real World: An Introductory Textbook (London: Routledge Press, anticipated 2010). At the Cassola Conference on Teaching Communication at Johnson and Wales University in Providence, RI she and Cindy Mercer presented "What is Native Fluency? She is working on an article about the poetry of Jean Valentine for a collection on that topic. She organized a panel at the Associated Writing Programs Conference on the subject of teaching poetry in prisons, and read there as part of a tribute to the poet Jane Cooper. The Dutchess County Arts Council awarded her an individual artist's fellowship, and in April, she will teach a free poetry workshop for teenagers at the Tivoli Library.
Jim Keller's new book, Writing Plural Worlds in Contemporary U.S. Poetry: Innovative Identities, is due out from Palgrave in August. He has just been nominated for the 2009 MSU Senior Class Council Award for Outstanding Faculty.
Emily Miller Mlcak recently had her debut as a jazz/blues singer. She writes, "It was in a concert honoring my father, so this falls under the 'make it happen for yourself' category, but I've sung in two other venues since then -- and I'm hoping to sing more and more in public."
Joanne B. Mulcahy's book Remedios: The Healing Life of Eva Castellanoz is forthcoming from Trinity University Press. She also published several essays this year, "The Weight of Faith: Generative Metaphors in the Stories of Eva Castellanoz" in Living With Stories, ed. William Schneider, and "Affectionados" in The Folklore Muse: Poetry, Fiction and Other Reflections by Folklorists, ed. Frank de Caro; both from University of Utah Press.
Eléna Rivera has been awarded a writing residency at the Fundación Valparaíso, an artist's colony in southern Spain (Mojacar) for the month of June 2009. Her most recent publication is a translation of Isabelle Baladine Howald's Secret of Breath from Burning Deck Press
Jane Sprague's Palm Press, which she edits and publishes, was written about in Poets and Writers Magagine's annual first books of poetry feature (for Kristin Palm's The Straits in Feb. 09). She has a chapbook coming out with Dusie Kollective (Apache Roadkill) and a book from Belladonna (with Diane Ward and Tina Darragh). She also published fellow Language & Thinking colleague Rob Halpern's 2nd book of poetry, Disaster Suites. She will be giving a reading in NYC in June with Tina and Diane as part of Belladonna's Elders Series. |
