Proper Posture May Prevent Office-Related RSI's
Keep it Neutral

When Preston Olson, DPT, owner of Prevention PT in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., works with clients on proper positioning at the workstation, he generally uses the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommendations as a guide. Keeping the body in a neutral position decreases the strain on the body and potential damage to nerves and muscles, he says.

Olson customarily approaches positioning from the head down. "I want the top part of the monitor at eye level, to about 15 degrees below," he says. This avoids undue neck strain that comes from constantly looking up or down.

"At the shoulders, you want to look at a chair that has back support up to the bottom of the shoulder blades at least, to give some support throughout the day," Olson recommends. Armrests should gently support the elbows at an approximate 90-degree angle without forcing the shoulder girdle into elevation.

New Classes/New Schedule
Beginning April 13, 2008

If you haven't joined us for classes in a while, make sure to check out the new schedule. We now offer 6-week pre-registration for evening Mat Classes. This has been implemented to alleviate the problem of having to arrive 45min. early to ensure a space. Though you do not need to be a member to participate in any of our classes, pre-registration is on a first-come first-served basis and Pilates Room Members have priority, followed by members of Island Health and Fitness. Check out the online schedule for a list of both pre-registered and walk-in class times and start dates. In addition to new mat classes be sure to look for the new evening Reformer class and a 90 min. Combo Class ( 45min Mat/45min Reformer ).

Though 6 private sessions and instructor approval are generally required before participating in our Reformer classes, we now offer a cost effective alternative to the private training prerequisite. The Fundamental Reformer class is an 8-week targeted series that will take you through all of the essentials, and will prepare you for entry level participation in regularly scheduled group Reformer classes. The next 8-week session begins April 16th. Check out the schedule online for a list of days and times and call to register soon. These classes fill up quick!
