HADITH OF THE DAY: JUST ONE GOOD DEED

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "(There was) a man whose only good deed was removing a thorny branch from the road (so travelers could pass unharmed)... God accepted that good deed and brought (the man) into Paradise."  Sunan of Abu-Dawood, Hadith 2503

CAIR-COLUMBUS 14TH ANNUAL BANQUET A SUCCESS!

(COLUMBUS, OH, 6/9/11)

On Sunday, June 5 over 350 people attended the Columbus Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Columbus) 14th Annual Banquet, celebrating the theme "Defining our Faith, Defending our Rights."

The speakers for the event were Imam Johari Abdul-Malik, Director of Outreach of Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Washington, D.C. and Comedian, Mohammed Amer of "Allah made Me Funny" Comedy Tour.

CAIR-Columbus' hard work was acknowledged in proclamations from U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown,  Ohio Representatives Carney and Amstutz and from the Mayor and City Council of Columbus.

"Central Ohio Muslims have once again shown their commitment to building bridges with people of other faiths and to defending civil liberties through their overwhelming support for the Council on American Islamic Relations," said CAIR-Columbus President Donald Furbee. "We cannot thank the those individuals and businesses enough for helping make the annual banquet a success, and making the work of CAIR-Columbus possible."

CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding. There are three CAIR chapters in Ohio- Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland.

CAIR-OH: FAIR QUESTIONS ABOUT TERRORIST WATCH LISTS

By The Plain Dealer Editorial Board

Clevelandplaindealer.com 6/10/11

When a U.S. citizen is arrested, that person has the right to a lawyer and to learn what crime he or she is suspected of committing. But when a citizen is handcuffed at the border, questioned for 2 1/2 hours without an attorney and her car is secretly searched -- all because her name appears, apparently erroneously, on a terrorist watch list -- such rights seem to evaporate.

At least, that's what Julia Shearson, a Muslim activist and executive director of the Cleveland office of the Council on American Islamic Relations, says she discovered in 2006 on her way back from Canada.

Even after the government acknowledged its mistake by releasing her, it would not say how Shearson got on the watch list or whether the growing complexity of the Automated Targeting System computer program used to track and rank terrorist threats was contributing to errors. Nor could Shearson figure out how to get her name off the list -- or, possibly, lists.

Yes, all travelers understand that they face added scrutiny because of the need for vigilance after 9/11. One of the lessons of the terrorist attacks was that stove-piped intelligence kept agencies from sharing names widely enough to track potential terrorist threats effectively. That's led to watch lists.

Still, those erroneously listed should be able to learn why, and to clear their names.

Working at first on her own and then with some pro bono lawyers, Shearson has sued the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for damages, alleging that her rights were violated because she hasn't been able to see or respond to the records upon which her watch listing was based. She won a major legal victory this April when the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed to let the case proceed to trial.

To protect the integrity of the watch lists -- and to make sure they don't turn into "witch hunt" lists -- Shearson and others erroneously detained should be able to learn why they've been listed.

IT'S TRAVEL SEASON- DO YOU KNOW YOUR RIGHTS?

Have you been stopped and harassed at the border or any entry point (airports) coming into the U.S.?

Have you been put on the "No Fly List"?

Can't get on a plane for an international flight or a domestic flight?

If so, CAIR-OHIO wants to know!

If you have experienced travel difficulties, whether at the airport or at the border, please contact your CAIR-Ohio office. We are planning on taking legal action on cases of "no fly" list, border or airport detentions and delays, harassment by Custom and Border Protection from 2001 up to the present.
