What is the purpose of health insurance exchanges and how soon might they be in place in Minnesota?

Former Gov. Tim Pawlenty proposed a health insurance exchange for Minnesota in 2007. Now health insurance exchanges are moving toward reality as part of the federal Affordable Care Act. Find out where Minnesota is in this process and how an exchange might change health insurance options for you.

Joining us will be Stefanie Konobeck, who recently left her position as health insurance exchange director of commercial operations at the Minnesota Department of Commerce to consult on building insurance exchanges with the states and the federal government.

Join the discussion and learn more about:

  • What is the current status of insurance exchange development
  • What is subject to the legislative process
  • What decisions still need to be made

We asked more than 1,100 Minnesotans in 40 communities over the last four months the following question: What does health reform mean to you?

You answered, and those answers are in the Citizen Solutions final report (pdf) to the bipartisan Health Care Reform Task Force, responsible for making health policy recommendations to Gov. Mark Dayton and the Minnesota Legislature.

Thanks to everyone who participated. We invite you to comment on the report. The Bush Foundation, our partner throughout the project, plans to test the findings contained within them through scientific opinion poll in coming months.

"One of the biggest insights I have gained is that my personal health and healthcare choices have an impact on others' choices and on society. Unhealthy decisions are not only impacting specific individuals, but
they are impacting those around them, the economy and society as a whole." - Louise Edwards

Louise Edwards, past lead panelist for Students Speak Out, was selected as a teen moderator for the Teen Citizen Solutions project.

In this article (pdf), Louise shares a short summary of the project findings, as well as her personal journey in considering health and health care, as she participated in Teen Citizen Solutions dialogues.

Intern Zoey Slater"The following Thursday, I worked at one of the Summer Policy Series events. I had read through the League's values and guiding principles. However, this event allowed me to see the Citizens League in action.

"The room was filled with professors, people who had worked with energy for decades, and people just curious about energy policy. We listened to what is and isn't working in energy today. Then, we talked in small groups about how we would change the way Minnesota deals with energy. That was the first time that I ever had to think about how I would change a policy."
