Connect: Teens wanted for health reform

Teen Citizen Solutions is an effort to engage Minnesotans ages 13-19 in an online conversation about what's important to the future of health and health care in our state.

Teens are already developing lifestyle choices and habits that could affect how health care works (including its cost) for generations to come. Teens also stand to inherit the long-term impacts of any decisions made about health care today. That's why it's critical that they are involved in the larger Citizen Solutions project.

Please spread the word to teens you know about this effort geared specifically toward them, and - if you like - join teens in the discussion. All are welcome.

There are two things teens can do right now:

  • Join the discussion: Lauren Gilchrist, Special Advisor to Gov. Mark Dayton on health care reform, has kicked off the discussion by asking teens how they define health, and if Minnesota teens are healthy.
  • Apply to be a lead panelist: Teens selected as lead panelists get a $150 stipend for sharing their insights and experiences and spreading the word about the project. Move fast! We'll be accepting applications through May 21.

We have kicked off our Citizen Solutions online activities, created to complement the in-person meetings

We hope to "see" you there!
Learn: Teens speak out on achievement

Students Speak Out Student Achievement logo

Teens are frequently exposed to the predominant definition of student achievement. It is part of their daily lives in their schools.

But the Citizens League wondered: What would teens say if they were exposed to some of the lesser-known ideas in today's dialogue?

This week we released the answer to this question in a new Students Speak Out report: Teens Think Deeply About Student Achievement.

Through May 31, we are inviting reactions and feedback on the project website, located here. For a quick summary, check out this week's blog post from Students Speak Out Director Kim Farris-Berg.

Is your Citizens League membership form lost in a pile of papers?

Consider sustaining membership! Sustaining members make a significant impact on our work by scheduling regular monthly or quarterly payments (until you'd like to make changes).

Here are some of the benefits of switching:

  • It's effective: Saving on paper, postage and administrative costs means we can spend more of your donation to accomplish the League's mission.
  • It's convenient: Automatic payments save you the time and trouble of renewing each year.
  • It's lasting: Spreading the donation over the year helps your wallet and ensures a consistent cash flow for the Citizens League.

Create: Help analyze our membership survey

Connect: Host a Common Cents workshop

Common Cents Logo

Last year, more than 600 Minnesotans across the state engaged in our Common Cents project to discuss: "What values and priorities are important to solving Minnesota's budget challenges?"

This year, we are again partnering with the Bush Foundation on a second round of state budget workshops and online activities, and we'd like you (and your elected representatives) to join us.

We're bringing Minnesotans' ideas and values to the Legislature and Gov. Mark Dayton to inform next year's debate. And this year, we're adding a second workshop on tax reform.

Would you like to bring a workshop to your workplace, club, church, or other group? We're scheduling them and looking for hosts now.

All workshops are presented free of charge. Hosts will be responsible for meeting logistics and for recruiting at least 20 participants of mixed backgrounds and/or ideologies.

For more information or to schedule a workshop, contact Lindsey Alexander at lindsey@citizing.org.
