Honoring Choices MN: Join the discussion on CitiZing

The Citizens League is participating in Honoring Choices Minnesota, a collaborative, community-wide initiative to inspire and support family conversations about end-of-life planning. Part of our effort includes a small project on CitiZing to learn from people's own experiences discussing these issues or caring for loved ones.

Join the discussion today: take this and past weeks' FAQ quizzes, get resources, and share your stories.

Higher Education Reform Phase I Steering Committee

We're looking for members who have an interest in higher education reform to serve on our Higher Education Phase I Steering Committee. This committee will inform our higher education reform project by developing an objective picture of higher education in Minnesota and a design framework to guide the project's subsequent phases (i.e., clear goals and guidance for reform, including design objectives).

Interested? Let us know here by tomorrow, May 6th.

Letter to Legislators on FAIM

The Citizens League recently sent a letter to Health and Human Services conferees about preserving a small, but important program called Family Assets for Independence in Minnesota (FAIM), our most functional and effective form of conditional cash transfers. Even in a time of many difficult decisions, we think this approach is one to keep funding and developing in the coming years to create pathways to prosperity.

Read the letter.

Join the Transportation Advancement Group

In 2008, the Citizens League helped secure funding from the Urban Partnership Agreement (UPA) to develop a comprehensive approach to reduce traffic congestion. One of the main strategies proposed and already evaluated is telecommuting (pdf). The results of the $3.2 million investment in telecommuting through eWorkplace produced almost twice the anticipated participation (3,300 telecommuters) and produced a 2:1 return on investment (ROI) in vehicle, time and emissions savings (over $6.6 million in savings).

The Citizens League is currently organizing an advancement group to focus on advancing telecommuting. Read more about the group and contact Bob DeBoer at bdeboer[at]citizensleague.org or at 651-293-0575 ext. 13 to get involved.

Help us develop our 2011 membership strategies

Join Citizens League members and supporters on Thursday, May 19th from 8:00 am - 9:30 am to help us think of strategies and activities to recruit new members and better engage current members.

If you are interested in attending this meeting or joining the membership committee please contact Cat Beltmann at cbeltmann[at]citizensleague.org or 651-293-0575 ext. 15.

Kicking Off Minnesota GO

Late last year, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) approached us about using CitiZing for a new project, Minnesota GO. The project aims to craft a vision for our future and all types of transportation for the next 50 years in an effort to better align the transportation system with what Minnesotan's expect for their quality of life, economy and natural environment. We were, of course, thrilled to be part of a project aimed at directly involving citizens in decision and policy-making. Read more...

We've already started our work online at CitiZing. We're also heading across the state through June to work through various scenarios with Minnesotans in person. Join us at one of these upcoming workshops:

Check out the calendar for when we'll be near you, and join us online in the meantime.

Let us bring the Students Speak Out Minnesota GO conversation to your class or youth group

In May, we will be visiting five student or teen groups to hear their ideas on a vision for life in 2061. Let us bring this discussion to you! We'll come with a few scenarios that predict what the world might be like in 50 years. Teens will use these scenarios to consider how the ways we live and work will be different, what values and priorities they will have in the midst of these scenarios, and how this might all affect transportation in Minnesota. Mn/DOT will use teens' insights as it develops its 50 year plan for state transportation.

Head to the project website to learn more and sign your class or group up now!
