Higher Education Reform Phase I Steering Committee

We're looking for members who have an interest in higher education reform to serve on our Higher Education Phase I Steering Committee. This committee will inform our higher education reform project by developing an objective picture of higher education in Minnesota and a design framework to guide the project's subsequent phases (i.e., clear goals and guidance for reform, including design objectives).

Interested? Click here and let us know by Friday, May 6th.

In 2008, the Citizens League helped secure funding from the Urban Partnership Agreement (UPA) to develop a comprehensive approach to reduce traffic congestion. One of the main strategies proposed and already evaluated is telecommuting (pdf). The results of the $3.2 million investment in telecommuting through eWorkplace produced almost twice the anticipated participation (3,300 telecommuters) and produced a 2:1 return on investment (ROI) in vehicle, time and emissions savings (over $6.6 million in savings).

The Citizens League is currently organizing an advancement group to focus on advancing telecommuting. Some of the key questions this group will address are:

  • What does the evaluation of eWorkplace tell us?
  • Can we help recruit more employers to consider telecommuting?
  • Are there state policy changes that could help encourage telecommuting?
  • Are there ways to communicate and engage citizens and employers in the potential value of telework?

Read more about the group and sign up.

You must be a member of the Citizens League to participate in advancement groups. Join online with a contribution of any amount.

Kicking Off Minnesota GO

Late last year, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) approached us about using CitiZing for a new project, Minnesota GO. The project aims to craft a vision for our future and all types of transportation for the next 50 years in effort to better align the transportation system with what Minnesotan's expect for their quality of life, economy and natural environment. We were, of course, thrilled to be part of a project aimed at directly involving citizens in decision and policy-making. Read more...

We've already started our work online at CitiZing. We're also heading across the state through June to work through various scenarios with Minnesotans in person. Join us at one of these upcoming workshops:

Check out the calendar for when we'll be near you, and join us online in the meantime.

Let us bring the Students Speak Out Minnesota GO conversation to your class or youth group

In May, we will be visiting five student or teen groups to hear their ideas on a vision for life in 2061. Let us bring this discussion to you! We'll come with a few scenarios that predict what the world might be like in 50 years. Teens will use these scenarios to consider how the ways we live and work will be different, what values and priorities they will have in the midst of these scenarios, and how this might all affect transportation in Minnesota. Mn/DOT will use teens' insights as it develops its 50 year plan for state transportation.

Susan Schuster is the Senior Community Affairs Consultant, Public and Health Affairs, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota and has been a member of the Citizens League for two years. She has most recently been involved with Policy Advisory Committee and has participated in the Quantum Civics training.

Susan tells us why she joined the
League:

"Through our CitizenBlue program at

Blue Cross we are encouraged to be involved in our community through civic engagement. The Citizens League provides an educational experience for me to learn more about policy and how to contribute toward positive change in our community, [while] enhancing my related community engagement knowledge and experience."

"In my current work, I direct Blue Cross' Heart of Blue corporate volunteerism program, supporting volunteerism and giving in our community. Throughout the last 20 years I have been personally involved in a wide range of community volunteerism. Community engagement provides an effective method for me to make a difference in my community. I would recommend Citizens League to anyone who is interested in connecting the dots between their volunteer work and the bigger picture. My passion for utilizing the arts as a bridge between cultures and making connections between people and opportunities is enhanced because of what I have learned being a member of Citizens League."
