A proposed constitutional amendment to change the way we select judges has brought to the forefront the issue of whether the state's current method of choosing judges puts at risk their ability to remain impartial and independent. At the center of the debate is the question of whether the current electoral process should be replaced with appointments, retention elections, and a committee-based process that would deliver evaluations to the voting public.

Join us for a panel discussion of the issue with:
    • The Honorable Sandy Keith, retired Chief Justice, Minnesota Supreme Court
    • Loy Colbeck, Minnesota Judicial Commission at-large member
    • The Honorable Susan Miles, District Court Judge, Washington County
    Moderated by Kathleen Meyerle, JD

Co-sponsored by: Rochester Chamber of Commerce, League of Women Voters, Olmsted County Bar Association

Join Policy Advisory Committee at its New Time

Participate in crafting the Citizens League's policy agenda. Members of the Policy Advisory Committee would like more members to be involved. Every other month, we are trying a new meeting time that we hope will allow more people to participate.

The next meeting is Tuesday, May 11 from 5:30- 7:00 p.m. at Children's Home Society and Family Services (1605 Eustis Street, St. Paul). To find out more or to attend, contact Annie Levenson-Falk at alevensonfalk[at]citizensleague.org or 651-293-0575 x16.

Alternative teacher certification at critical point in House and Senate

The Citizens League supports expanding teacher licensing opportunities to qualified candidates through "alternative certification" as one tool to help close the educational achievement gap. (Read more about our position.)

Alternative certification is part of bills in both the House and Senate, as Minnesota tries to position itself for federal funding through the next round of the Race to the Top program. Bills in both houses are at a critical point. If you support this, now is the time to make your support known by contacting your legislators.

Judicial reform proposal still held up in House

Legislation proposing a constitutional amendment to protect the impartiality of Minnesota courts continues to advance in the Senate, but we need to urge leadership to move it forward in the House. Join us in urging Speaker Kelliher and Majority Leader Sertich to provide an opportunity for all House members to vote on the bill. Click here to send an email and view talking points, and contact their offices by phone: Speaker Kelliher at 651-296-2208, Majority Leader Sertich at 651-296-2909.

Proposed cuts threaten progress in mental health

Legislation in the Minnesota House proposes serious cuts to mental health funding that would threaten recent progress made by mental health funding reform.

Partly as a result of the Minnesota Mental Health Action Group that the Citizens League convened from 2003-2007, the legislature in 2007 approved a comprehensive reform that redesigned the system for mental health care delivery and payments, and then funded that redesign. These proposed cuts would roll back the 2007 improvements.

Read more about the legislative proposal from the National Alliance on Mental Illness-Minnesota, a major partner in our 2003-2007 work on mental health.

Please let us know if you contact your legislators on any of these issues.

Attend a Regional Workshop to Help Plan the Future for MN Parks and Trails

The Citizens League is partnering with the Department of Natural Resources on its Parks and Trails Legacy Project. We are helping the DNR facilitate public discussions regarding how money from the 2008 Legacy Amendment and other sources should be spent.

Attend one of our regional workshops to share your vision for Minnesota's parks and trails. Sixteen workshops are currently scheduled in May and June. View the full list of workshops and read more about the project.
