At age 65, the average person has an 80% chance of needing some type of long-term care in their future years, with an average cost of $48,000. Many people are shocked to find out that Medicare doesn't cover their long-term care needs. The default has become Medicaid, but that is not a sustainable solution.

In short, we face an unprecedented set of enormous costs that we have not prepared for, either individually or publicly.

The Citizens League's Long-Term Care Financing Committee has drafted a set of recommendations to begin to address this problem. At this Mind Opener, we'll share the recommendations and ask for feedback. We'll also discuss a new federal program, the CLASS Act, that was included as part of the health care reform package.

While the hotdish remains a staple of the Midwestern diet, many things have changed the way we grow, purchase, and prepare food for ourselves and our families. With every shift in consumer buying habits, the food industry has needed to adapt its products to fit consumer needs and wants. Join the Citizens League and distinguished leader Kathy Wierner for April's Inter-Generational Roundtable event, where we will discuss the ever-changing relationship between people and the food on their plates.

Pair Up With A New Member

Already a member and supporter of the Citizens League? Pair up with a new member and help them learn more about the organization and how they can get involved.

New members often ask to be matched with someone who has been involved for longer so they can have help navigating their first few months of membership. Being an "Ambassador" is easy and doesn't take much time. All we ask is that you reach out to a new member and offer to attend an event with them or help them find opportunities to get involved.

We'll give you an orientation and all the information you'll need. You don't have to know all the answers, you just have to know where to find them -- and we make that part easy.

For more information or to volunteer, contact Cat Beltmann at 651-293-0575 x10 or cbeltmann[at]citizensleague.org.

Help Develop the Citizens League's Agenda: Join Policy Advisory Committee at its New Time

Want to be part of crafting the overall policy agenda for the Citizens League? Then the Policy Advisory Committee might be the option for you. Now is a good time to join, as we are assessing our recent policy work and looking for more opportunities to advance solutions. Every other month, we are trying a new meeting time that we hope will allow more people to participate. The first opportunity is Tuesday, May 11 from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. (location TBD).

To find out more or to join, contact Annie Levenson-Falk at alevensonfalk[at]citizensleague.org or 651-293-0575 x16.
