Increasing opportunities for teachers of color in Minnesota

The Citizens League supports a bill has been introduced in the Senate and the House (SF 2811/HF 3093) that would expand teacher licensure in the state, in line with our 2009 report on immigrant students and higher education.

At the core of this issue is the achievement gap between students of color and their white peers. Minnesotans from immigrant families and students of color are underrepresented in school faculty and administrations, though they make up an increasing percentage of our study body. Our state should increase the opportunities for these Minnesotans to become teachers, counselors, and school administrators. These positions not only serve as resources for families from their communities but also as role models for students. (Find out more about the Citizens League's position.)

It is unclear how education legislation will be organized in the coming weeks, so we encourage our members to contact House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher and Senate Majority Leader Larry Pogemiller, and let them know that you want them to provide the leadership to pass expanded teacher licensure in Minnesota.

    Rethinking Transportation Finance: April 21

In order to have a sustainable transportation system that responds to users' choices, we need to make actual transportation costs more transparent and tie funding for those costs more directly to travel behavior and benefits received. Citizens League work over the past several years has helped increase choices and transparency in the Twin Cities transportation system.

Join us along with the University of Minnesota's Center for Transportation Studies, the Humphrey Institute's State and Local Policy Program, MnDOT, and other partners for:

While the hotdish remains a staple of the Midwestern diet, many things have changed the way we grow, purchase, and prepare food for ourselves and our families. With every shift in consumer buying habits, the food industry has needed to adapt its products to fit consumer needs and wants. Join the Citizens League and distinguished leader Kathy Wierner for April's Inter-Generational Roundtable event, where we will discuss the dynamic and ever-changing relationship between people and the food on their plates.

Represent the Citizens League across the state

The Citizens League will be co-hosting a series of public meetings with the Department of Natural Resources throughout the state about how to spend funds from the sales tax increase in the 2008 Legacy Amendment, and we need a representative.

You would be co-presenting with the DNR, providing background on who the Citizens League is and what this project is about (don't worry: we'll train you and give you talking points), so you'll need to be comfortable in front of a crowd. We have a particular need for help with out-state meetings (a full listing can be viewed here).

For those of you who don't love the spotlight, we also need volunteers to help facilitate and report back on discussions.

As a volunteer, your mileage, meals, and lodging will be covered.

Email Erin Sapp at erin[at]citizensleague.org if you have questions or are interested.
