waterMinnesota's water face serious threats that we are not effectively confronting.

40% of tested water bodies, for example, have been found to be polluted. Most of this pollution is coming not from a few industrial polluters but from the activities all of us do on the land -- runoff from roads, roofs, parking lots, and farms.

The way that we govern water is not being effective in addressing challenges like this.

The Citizens League Water Policy Study Committee has spent the past year and a half examining how the ways that we manage water need to change to effectively address today's water policy issues.

Join us to hear the conclusions and recommendations of the committee and to discuss how all of us must recognize our roles in water governance.

    With:
    • Gene Merriam, co-chair of the study committee; president, Freshwater Society; former Commissioner of the Dept. of Natural Resources and state Senator
    • Janne Flisrand, member of the study committee; consultant on land use planning, sustainability, affordable housing, and transportation
    • Sean Kershaw, executive director of the Citizens League
    What do your dollars fund?

In water policy, a study committee of Citizens League members found that Minnesota's waters face serious threats. 40% of evaluated lakes, rivers and streams have been found to be polluted. Most water pollution today comes from "nonpoint sources:" runoff from individual and collective activities on the land that makes its way into water bodies. The way that Minnesota governs water is not effectively addressing this challenge. We need a collaborative governance
model in which the people and organizations that contribute to water problems play a central role in addressing these problems.

Your contributions to the Citizens League can help to move these important recommendations forward to the next stage.
    • $1,200 funds a Mind Opener, a breakfast discussion on topics central to our policy agenda. The Water Policy Mind Opener will take place on November 17th.
    • $2,500 enables the printing and distribution of our Policy Reports to public policy leaders.
    • $10,000 funds two months of a Study Committee, the hallmark of the Citizens League engagement process.
