Another UL Certification for EMSEAL:  WFR2 Now Certified for Use in Gypsum Wall Assemblies

EMSHIELD WFR2 wall expansion joint by EMSEAL has passed UL 2079 for use in U300 and U400 series gypsum wall assemblies.

In addition WFR2 has tested to a Sound Transmission Class rating of 56+.

Other Innovations From EMSEAL:

Greetings again from EMSEAL:

We are very pleased to announce another UL certification for our single-unit EMSHIELD fire-rated, watertight expansion joint product line.

In addition, sound transmission testing has yielded extraordinary noise reduction results for these products.

Gypsum Wall Certification to UL 2079:
WFR2 has once again passed the rigors of UL 2079 certification for walls.  This time in a gypsum wall assembly.  The result is UL and ULC certification for WFR2 in U300 and U400 fire-rated gypsum wall construction.

Our EMSHELD product line elminates the need for multiple products to achieve sealing against water, fire, sound, wind, etc. when filling structural, partition and other joint openings.

With the EMSHIELD deck and wall products, "one install does it all".  This means simplification in design, materials use, and installation and marks a major advancement in fire compartmentation

The assembly listing designations for gypsum wall assemblies can be viewed in the UL database at the following links:

The previously achieved UL Listings for concrete-based wall assemblies can be viewed in the UL database at:
ULC: JF131

WFR2 is certified for joints from 1 - 6 inches (25 - 150mm) wide.

The product features movement capability of +25% and -25% (total 50%) of the nominal material size.

WFR2 is available in 12 standard and custom colors and unlike blanket-style systems, does not rely on a coverplate for its fire-rating.

Sound Barrier: STC 56+ for WFR2:
EMSEAL has recently subjected all of our wall expansion joint sealant products to independent Sound Transmission Class (STC) testing by a major independent testing lab.

We tested a number of our wall products and none had an STC of less than 52 and an OITC of 38.  And that's installed on just one side of the wall.
The results are impressive.  To the considerable surprise of the lab engineers, the sound transmission class rating for WFR2 exceeded that of the STC 56 wall in which it was tested.
This means that the rating for WFR2 stands currently at STC 56+.  The lab is now constructing a STC 80 wall in which we will run the test again in late October 2009.  From these results we will be able to provide an absolute STC rating for WFR2.

As an acoustical product that doubles as a thermal insulator while additionally accommodating structural movement and providing watertightness, WFR2 is uniquely suited to earning LEED points by contributing to the indoor environmental quality of the facility.  WFR2 serves multiples purposes for the price of one product.

We will give you all the acoustical data for all of our wall products in an upcoming email newsletter.

Background:
Structural expansion joints bisect buildings to allow for structural movement caused by thermal, wind, seismic and other factors.  As a result, structural joints are a gap through all other building elements.

Closing and sealing these gaps is essential to maintaining the building's integrity.

EMSHIELD WFR2 - which stands for Wall, Fire-Rated, 2-hours - performs all the functions necessary to accommodate movement while restoring the sound, weather, and insulation intentions of the walls.

All of these functions are acheived in a single installation of a single product reducing environmental impact while meeting life-safety and building code requirements as well as livability objectives.

Having one product that accomplishes what several did before saves the time, effort and expense associated with designing, constructing for, and installing a variety of products to create fire-rated, watertight, insulated, sound attenuated, and energy-efficient wall systems.

And, with factory-fabricated Universal-90 transition pieces it is possible to connect WFR2 in walls to DFR2 in decks to completely compartmentalize fire-rated rooms and/or floors.

Installed in the building envelope WFR2 not only seals, insulates and accommodates movement but will protect against the risk of wrap-around fires.

The new hybrid wall joint system is designed for buildings, stadiums, arenas, hospitals, schools, universities, airports, parking decks, hotels and any other structures where containment of fire at structural expansion joints is required.

Being UL 2079 certified means that it has been tested and passed the rigorous Underwriters Laboratories expansion joint sealant cycling, fire, and hose-stream testing. Click here to view a short video of the UL 2079 testing method.

EMSEAL, established in 1959 and located in the U.S. since 1979, has provided sealant systems and technical support to many prominent structures including stadiums, arenas, hospitals, parking structures, airports, malls and other commercial and public sector projects.

EMSEAL products are used worldwide, including in the new Meadowlands, Yankee Stadium and Citi Field in New York, Westfield Malls, American Airlines Arena in Miami, The Empire State Building, Lincoln Center, The CN Tower Toronto, Watergate Hotel, Greensboro, N.C. Coliseum, Houston Intercontinental Airport, the Pentagon, Nordstrom's Stores, FedEx Field Washington Redskins Stadium, Citizens Bank Philadelphia Phillies Ballpark, California Polytechnic and the Atlantic Station in Atlanta.

EMSEAL operates out of two large factories - its recently relocated headquarters and engineered products plant in Westborough, MA and its precompressed sealant manufacturing plant in Toronto, Canada.
