Potluck & a Film
| Sunday, March. 11, 5 pm
This month, we'll be watching The Edge of Heaven (originally Auf de Anderer Seite) . Here's the summary:
Winner of the Best Screenplay award at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, director Fatih Akin's deeply humanistic drama follows the stories of four Turks and two Germans as they realize the meaning of love while facing the harsh realities of today's world.
Nejat is a second-generation Turkish immigrant living in Germany. When his father invites the prostitute Yeter to move in with him, Nejat disapproves, but he softens toward her when he learns that she regularly sends tuition money to her daughter in Turkey. Suddenly, Yeter is dead, the victim of Ali's temper. With Ali in jail, Nejat travels to Turkey to find the daughter. Story interweaves with story in this multi-layered drama of life "on the other side."
Please let Vivi know what you'll be bringing to share and to get directions if you need them.

Women's History Month
|
As the White House's statement puts it so eloquently:
"As Americans, ours is a legacy of bold independence and passionate belief in fairness and justice for all. For generations, this intrepid spirit has driven women pioneers to challenge injustices and shatter ceilings in pursuit of full and enduring equality.
During Women's History Month, we commemorate their struggles, celebrate centuries of progress, and reaffirm our steadfast commitment to the rights, security, and dignity of women in America and around the world.

|
Greetings! | These are challenging times and sometimes it feels like women's progress has not just slowed, that it's regressing. I remind myself of those "Iron Jawed Angels" and all they endured to secure the vote for us. We can do no less for future generations.
Thank you for speaking out, helping to educate voters, volunteering, and joining hands with the women and men across the country and the world who are working to secure representation and equity for women and girls.
Ruth Wahtera, Editor P.S. See you at Miss Representation Wednesday evening! |

Our Public Policy program this month will be Sunday morning, March 25, 11am.
As a follow-up to the excellent 5-part PBS series Women, War, and Peace we just finished watching, concluding with the powerful Pray the Devil Back to Hell, about how the women of the African nation of Liberia united to end a brutal 14-year civil war, we'll watch Iron Ladies of Liberia, a 2007 PBS Independent Lens documentary about the achievements and struggles of Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, President of Liberia, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and the first-ever freely-elected female head of state in Africa.

Fundraiser Flea Market Table
From Dolores LaChance, LAF Chair
|

Thanks to all who worked to make our LAF fund raiser, the French Club Flea Market, a worthwhile event. We sent out the word to start looking for items to contribute; some members volunteered to collect donations at their homes, some spent time making reminder calls and others offered to work the day of the event. I wish to express my gratitude to all who took the time to find items to donate and make those calls, with heart felt thanks to the early birds who were there to help set up and price our wares, to all who gave up part of their Saturday to help, and to Diana Chesmel whose artistic gift kept our table displays inviting and selling. I could not have done it without all your support. We took in $384.75 from the sale of your donated 'treasures', which I think is a huge success.
Thanks, Dolores LaChance
