Potluck & a Film
Sunday, Feb. 12, 5 pm

The film this month is Tabloid -- A somewhat hilarious documentary released in 2010 on a former Miss Wyoming who is charged with abducting and and imprisoning a young Mormon Missionary.

Please let Vivi know what you'll be bringing to share and to get directions if you need them.

New Website
logo A small group has been working on our branch's new website and blog. We'd like two things from you.
  • Take a look. The banner lighthouses are photos by David Cardell. Give us some feedback.
  • Confirm receiving updates. We'll add members to the list to receive an email when the site is updated. You will not receive updates unless you confirm your agreement.

You will receive a more detailed explanation when we initiate this process mid-month.

Thanks to MaryAnn Casey, Marji Roberts, Susan Holland, Jenn Mayfield, David Cardell, and Vivi Hlavsa for working with me on this project.

AAUW NYS Convention

"The Women's History Trail: Walking in Their Footsteps"

Prepare now to attend the April 20-22, 2012 AAUW New York State convention at Woodcliff Hotel and Spa in the Rochester area, a section of this country which has been pivotal in the quest for giving voice to women and families to ensure freedom, higher education, and votes for women.

While you are at the convention you can look forward to focusing on the details of the entire Women's History Trail project, be inspired to walk in the footsteps of historic women leaders, and be encouraged to take action to preserve their history, while taking strides to strengthen your own steps on our AAUW journey.

The entire convention is dedicated to the powerful women who fought for change and understood the pathways to equity. It is dedicated also to you as AAUW NYS members in motion for the same quest of breaking through barriers.

Register online now at www.aauw-nys.org at a discount price.

Purses, not baskets - One of the traditional fundraisers to support legal action held at the NYS Convention has been a silent auction for baskets filled by branches. This year we're trading in baskets for purses.

Do you have a great idea for a purse? We can donate up to five to support legal cases that impact women, like the Walmart suits. We're grateful to Joan Monk who has donated a basket from Kingston for several years and has already  committed to a purse donation this year

International News
February and March Will be Busy Times for AAUW's International Scope
by Jenn Mayfield, Intern'l Chair

International  Traveling to the UN Twice
I'm attending my first CTAUN conference on Friday, Feb. 3rd and later in the month will attend the Commission on the Status of Women. I've posted about both on our blog and hope you'll read the posts here

March, Women's History Month

Women's History Month grew out of Women's History Week, which was inspired by International Women's Day. Every March, since 1911, members of the international community have observed International Women's Day. Now held on March 8 every year, it is a day to talk about the status of women throughout the world, highlight women's issues, celebrate women's progresses, and consider the obstacles that still remain.

In 2010, groups of women from Congo and Rwanda met each other on a bridge connecting their two countries. There was a war between the two countries that ended in 2003 but left a legacy of tension and conflict. The women met to show that they could bridge their differences and build a better future together.

Their demonstration inspired groups around the world to hold International Women's Day events on bridges to symbolize the progress, determination, and spirit of international community.

In our area, there will be a walk across the Walkway Over the Hudson. Festivities will begin at 2:30, March 8 and include speakers, booths, and activities. The Poughkeepsie Branch of AAUW is participating in the walk and planning a lunch program at the Mid-Hudson Heritage Center. They have asked us to take part with them.

Tying It All Together

The March program for the branch will be a panel discussion on development and women's issues around the world. This program will pull together and expand upon the knowledge and information our branch will gain from all of the upcoming events. It will be an opportunity to explore issues that may be on the fringe of our consciousnesses and learn from experts in the field.

I hope to start a discussion that will inspire us to action. This event will give us a more complete picture of women's issues around the world, enabling us to identify those issues that we are most passionate about. Going forward, I hope to have the members who are interested in continuing the discussion, learning more, and taking action join the International Committee.

In the meantime, if there are any subjects or regions that anyone is especially curious about, please contact me and I will try my best to find a panel member who can address that topic. Also, if anyone is interested in helping me plan and recruit panelists, I would greatly appreciate your help and input.

Miss Representation Screening

The Kingston Branch is very excited to host a screening of the award-winning film, Miss Representation at the Rosendale Theatre Collective on March 7, 2012. The film examines portrayals of women and girls in the media, assesses the limited diversity of women's roles, and women's under-representation in most media streams. It critically analyzes the ways that this misrepresentation of women and girls in the media impacts women and girl in the real world.

Following the film, the audience is invited to participate in a panel discussion of women with careers in media.

Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film features interviews with a diverse selection of public figures, including, for example Katey Couric, Corey Booker, Geena Davis, Condoleeza Rice, and Rosario Dawson. To learn more about the movie and its message, visit http://www.missrepresentation.org/

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets are available for purchase here.

News, Celebrations, and etcetera

January Briefings

Komen Foundation de-funds Planned Parenthood Breast Screening: Using the rationale of a Senate Investigation, the Komen Foundation says it will no longer fund breast screening at Planned Parenthood clinics. The Senate investigation was initiated by conservative Florida Senator and anti-abortion activist Steams; many have assailed the probe as "an unwarranted political ploy." Both nationally and locally AAUW has withdrawn support for Komen activities until this issue is resolved.

At the Capital:  AAUW NYS is reviving a legislative action day in Albany. Travel with us to visit our elected officials on April 17th to ask their support on pay equity and two or three other bills that are important to women and families. More info to come.

Speaking of Convention --- Also be prepared to vote for officers for the coming biennium. The candidates submitted by the nominating committee are:

  • President: Mary Lou Davis, Poughkeepsie Branch
  • Program Vice President: Melissa Guardaro, Rockland County Branch
  • Educational Opportunities Fund Vice President: Doris McLallen, Jefferson County Branch

If you're interested in attending the Convention, April 20-22, let a Kingston board member know. We have a some money budgeted that we divide among attendees.
