Potluck and a Film
Here and There

On Sunday, January 9th, we'll meet at 5 PM at ViVi's house for a covered dish supper (I'll have split pea soup), and then watch Here and There, a 2009 award-winning Serbian film, written and directed by Darko Lungulov and starring David Thornton and Branislav Trifunović:

Here and There poster

The film follows two interconnected stories. Robert (Thornton), a depressed New Yorker, tries to make quick cash and ends up in Serbia, where instead of money he finds his soul. At the same time, a young Serbian immigrant, Branko (Trifunović), struggles in an unforgiving New York, desperately trying to bring his girlfriend from Serbia to USA.

Mirijana Karanović plays Branko's mother.

I hope you can join us.

Best wishes--ViVi

Thanks to Gloria Sender and Jane Riley who have agreed to help. We'll be scheduling an opportunity to learn  to use the newsletter software later this month. Let me know if you'd like to join us.
Contact Ruth Wahtera for more information.

Greetings!
Bette

First, let me wish you a Happy, Healthy New Year. I hope you spent a joyous holiday time with friends and family.

Secondly, let me thank Bev Sloane for an excellent holiday speakers at our branch party on Dec.14. Both speakers-Rita Kogler Carver and our member, Andrea Newman Winston, were sensational. We were thrilled to hear them talk about their experiences back stage on Broadway, television and the Sydney Olympics.

Also thanks to Vivi for helping with the silent auction. Pat Stedge graciously donated her winnings from the 50/50 raffle. Thank you, Pat. AAUW benefitted from both the raffle and auction by over $300.

In January, Stan and I will be leaving New York for a three month stay in Arizona. If you have any concerns or questions regarding AAUW, please direct them to Vivi Hlavsa. We will be holding a general meeting before each branch meeting so that the membership will all be on board with everything on the calendar. With all your help, I am positive everything will work out.

I wish each and every one of you a wonderful winter season. Please support your organization any way you can-whether by coming to meetings or volunteering with the upcoming Flea Market day in Saugerties or bringing us your ideas and good suggestions.

We are only as strong as each of us gives a part of ourselves to a worthy cause.
Your President,
Bette Nizky

Roberta Schiff
Roberta Schiff

Roberta Schiff has eaten a vegan diet since the mid-nineties when someone said to her, "A value is not a value if you don't practice it!"

On January 15th, Schiff will share some of the reasons she chose to give up first meat, then dairy and fish. She will bring a variety of healthful and delicious vegan food for attendees to try. She will answer questions about how to shop and prepare these foods and discuss the impact of reducing our consumption of meat and dairy, including the impact on diabetes and heart disease. The presentation will be interactive.

Armed with an M.S. degree in Community Health Education, Schiff has studied whole foods cooking and food preparation for 15 years. She has presented at many conferences and community events and is a past president o the Mid-Hudson Vegetarian Society.

By the way, Roberta is also a stand-up comic. Should be interesting!

Journeyman is a one-hour award winning documentary about rites of passage, mentoring, and male culture in America.

The film follows Joe and Mike, two teenage boys dying for healthy adult mentors. After their struggles with depression and violence, they join a mentoring program. As they work with male mentors they face challenging rites of passage, discover their inner strength, and learn to engage with a community of supportive men.

The film discovers experiments to reinvent male communities by giving boys what they need to grow into mature manhood. Finally, Journeyman follows its' characters into an authentic "Rites of Passage" where mentoring from a community of men and boys create a transformation experience for young boys entering adolescence. Spotlights Shine on AAUW Fellows

Jane Chen, CEO and co-founder of Embrace , was interviewed on 20/20 (Friday, December 17) for her role in creating inexpensive incubators that help underweight babies keep warm in developing countries. Chen, who received a Selected Professions Fellowship from AAUW, is continuing her work to decrease infant mortality rates. Learn more.

Rosalind Wiseman, another AAUW fellowship and grant recipient and author of Queen Bees and Wannabes, appeared on the December 17 episode of What Would You Do? This show included a segment about bullying, an area in which Wiseman provided expertise.

New!AAUW NYS: If you want to know what other branches are doing, or if you want to discuss something on your mind related to AAUW in NYS, or see what others have on their mind, "like" this new page and start posting and commenting. The most successful groups are those where everyone contributes, so please help get this page cooking.

AAUW Kingston NY Branch: We have lots of ways to communicate with each other, so we hope this page is a way to let other women in the Hudson Valley know about us. It's also a good way to read some of the blog posts from the branch and from National.

Never joined Facebook? Can't see the use? Think of it as a way to learn more about your grandchildren, your children, nieces and nephews without asking lots of questions, as well as a way to join cross-branch discussions. Give it a try. And don't hesitate to ask one of us for help.
