Rescheduled due to January snowstorm - On Sunday, February 14th, 5 PM, we will meet at my house (directions on request to have a covered dish supper and watch "I Am the Other Woman" directed by the German New Wave director (and former actress), Margrethe von Trotta, born 1942.

Trip Information
No Spring Trips Planned
Chartered Bus

When the Kingston Branch began offering trips, few other trip opportunities were available. Our trips also generated money for our scholarship fund.

Today, many groups offer trips, often for prices we can't match. We've had to cancel several recent trips for lack of participation. As a result, we aren't planning any spring trips.

We will plan a couple of summer trips to places others don't go.We'd appreciate your input into our planning, so watch for a survey in the next two weeks.

Meanwhile, we'll share information about trips others have scheduled in the hopes that you'll continue to enjoy the wealth of our region's resources.

Thank for your support.

About AAUW

AAUW's Value Promise
By joining AAUW, you belong to a community that breaks through educational and economic barriers so that all women have a fair chance.

AAUW's Mission
AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.

Greetings!
We hope this month's program will be of interest to a broader and, perhaps, younger audience. Joel Ludlow will be entertaining and certainly different from our usual fare -- and a good opportunity for an outing with friends of all ages.

While we aren't charging admission, we are suggesting donations to our local scholarship fund. In this time of rising tuition and books, we want to give everything we can.

Haircut makeover
From the Oprah Great Hair Makeover
At AAUW, we tend to be a pretty cerebral group -- bridge, book clubs, breaking through barriers -- but that doesn't mean that we don't care about how we look. A compliment about our appearance can make us stand up a bit straighter, put a smile on our lips, and a twinkle in our eye.

Join us on Saturday, February 13, when Joel Ludlow, Hairdresser to the Stars, will demonstrate and talk about things we can do to look our best.

Joel practices his craft, making women and men from all walks of life look their best, at the well-known Kenneth's Salon in Manhattan. Joel's client list has included women as varied as Katherine Graham and Madeleine Albright; Debra Messing (Will & Grace) and Dana Delaney (Desperate Housewives). He has worked fashion shows for Mary McFadden and Missoni, VIP weddings, and  innumerable photoshoots.

Invite your daughters, grand-daughters, friends and neighbors. This should be a fun afternoon. When Joel shares the tricks of the trade, he's very entertaining.

Haiti Relief Effort by a Local Agency

Haitian Children
Our hearts go out the the people of Haiti. The dimensions of the devastation are hard to comprehend and the long and expensive work of recovery lies ahead. If you can contribute to the effort, consider a local 501(c)3 agency with twenty years experience working in Haiti.

The Haitian People's Support Project based in West Hurley, NY, was founded in 1990, and promotes Haitian self-sufficiency through educational exchange, material and technical support, nutritional and educational projects in Haitian orphanages, schools, cooperatives, and sustainable living programs. Pierre and Terry Leroy, the founders, are well known locally. The Freeman has written articles about them in the past.

They are currently mounting a relief team of physicians, nurses, and other skilled people. If you are interested in traveling to Haiti to help, get in touch with them.

There's a paypal donate link on their website or MAKE A DONATION BY SENDING YOUR CHECK PAYABLE TO:

Feedback from the College/University Partnerships Webinar -- Doris Goldberg
College University Partnerships

Follow-up: Monday evening , January 25, our electronic maven, Ruth Wahtera, connected us to the internet webinar that AAUW presented on the AAUW/College/University Partnership. Irwin and I listened in the hopes that the Partnership Program would tie into the scholarships that we offer students.

Briefly, the Partnership Program is a means for AAUW to connect with and build a data base of young students. AAUW offers college or university partners free e-membership for their undergraduates and a year's free AAUW membership to graduates. AAUW also sponsors a course, Smart Start, about negotiating starting salaries for those about to enter the workforce,  an effort to reduce the earning disparity between men and women.

There is also a program that encourages young women to run for office while they are undergraduates, because research has shown that women who hold elected office while in college are more likely to run for elective office after graduation. Also, The Princeton Review offers their review courses for various graduate studies at a discount to students enrolled in Partner colleges and universities.

The cost to the school for the Partner Program is a sliding scale based on the number of enrolled students, but does not exceed $350 per year.

AAUW is recruiting branch members to serve as state/branch chairs and work with local and regional colleges to establish and extend this program. SUNY Ulster, where our Kingston branch offers scholarship aid, is not yet in the Partnership Program, nor is SUNY New Paltz, Bard or Vassar.

This effort will be further discussed in our Board and Branch meetings but any members who would be interested in chairing or assisting in this program should contact me at 679-3239.

Book Discussion Group
The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman
Book coverFor our Feb.16th meeting, Black History Month,we are reading The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman by Ernest J.Gaines. Vivi Hlavsa will present background on the author. At the beginning of the meeting we will show an 18 minute video titled The Psychological Residuals of Slavery. We have watched this before but it makes several points that we can again ponder.
Other News
Our January meeting  focused on a lively discussion of Vicente Blasco Ibanez' book,  The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The author's background was presented by Rokki Carr.  Areas debated:
1. This was written as propaganda against the Germans at the request of the Allies.
2. There was much maturing of the main characters. Don Marcel became less greedy. Julio developed into a person with a purpose. Marguerite was less frivolous and more self sacrificing. Some felt the characters were caricatures.
3. All were interested in the trench warfare used in WW1.
4.The losses and sufferings caused by War and the meaninglessness of War.

April Book Announcement
The book Bird Song by Sebastian Faulkes was chosen by the group for April since Vivi Hlavsa will not be doing the community wide book read this year. One of the reasons this book was chosen is because it features a British soldier caught up in WW1 and trench warfare is again involved.
