I Am the Other Woman
|
On Sunday, January 17th, 5 PM, we will meet at my house (directions on request to have a covered dish supper and watch "I Am the Other Woman" directed by the German New Wave director (and former actress), Margrethe von Trotta, born 1942.
It takes place after fall of 'The Wall,' and the focus is on personal relationships, against a background of politics involving the Stasi and its adherents in former East
Germany. Made in mid-'90s.

Gift Cards for Ten Families
|

The Diversity Fund Family gift
cards were presented to 10 deserving families from the community in
December. The Family Social Worker gave me the names of the families based on
her home visits, students' achievement, effort, and attendance. The
students felt honored and are very grateful to AAUW for
recognizing their hard work. After Winter Break, I will see the students and
give an update of how the gift cards helped to provide food, clothing, gifts and
supplies for these families. Have a Happy New Year.
Sincerely, Arlene Bruck

A
College/University Partnerships Webinar
|
Several of us have been wondering about how to build bridges to the college
students and faculty at SUNY New Paltz and Ulster Community College. After all, AAUW provides more scholarship and fellowship money to women than any other organization -- more than $4M each year! AAUW will
host a college/university webinar on January 25, 2010, at at 6 p.m. EST for
AAUW member leaders. The webinar will provide an overview of AAUW's college/university partner member program as well as highlight the wide
array of benefits available to students. They are meeting with
college/university representatives earlier in the day, so they should have some
interesting ideas.
E-mail
AAUW to RSVP and receive webinar instructions. If you'd rather participate/listen
with others, let Ruth Wahtera know you'd like to join her.

News and Celebrations
|
From Dolores LaChance:
A great big thank-s to all the gals who participated in the 'Holiday
Wrapping' project for the Legal Action Foundation at the mall. We cleared a total of $515
despite the threat of a scary snow storm on Sat., the 19th.
Everyone
seemed pleased with the activity, actually enjoying the experience, and
many first timers offered to do it again next year. It was fun , interesting, and the packages looked beautiful, as the
supplies and facilities provided by Hadassah truly inspire
creativily. So, please keep it in mind for next year and do give it try.
********
The AAUW NYS Convention is for everyone, not just branch officers, and is a great way to meet women from around the state, learn, and enjoy a beautiful lakeside setting at the Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown, New York.
The emphasis this year is on equity and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs for young women and girls. Speakers include Linda Hallman, AAUW Executive Director; Liz Krueger, NYS Senator; Carolyn Kemet, Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee; Kerry Connelly, Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York; and Gina Torry, NGO Working Group on Women, Peace, and Security at the United Nations. Linda will give the keynote, Mission 2010, and workshops on AAUW's latest research report and current public policy efforts. We'll share more information in subsequent issues.
If you are interested in attending the convention, April 23-25, please let Susan Holland know.
