President's Letter
Branch History
Dear AAUW members,
I want to inform all of you of our upcoming travel plans starting next week.

As some of you already know, my mother is going to celebrate her 101st birthday on October 16. She has been having a hard time these past few months and we do not know from day to day how she is doing. We are planning to travel to Ohio to be with my sister and brother-in-law who live in Columbus, about 20 minutes from her nursing home.

My husband and I have spoken to Mother's doctor and expressed our deep concerns about her health and the quality of her life.
He said that my mother is not terminal and he does not expect her to "go in the night". He was very optimistic and felt that what she was experiencing was a passing phase . The doctor told us to "go do anything you planned to do because life is short. Seize the day."

Consequently, after her birthday, Stan and I will wend our way to Arizona where our son, daughter-in-law, and new 4-month-old grandchild live. We will see a part of this great country we have never seen before. We hope to be in Arizona for the winter months and be back home in late March or early April.

Therefore, dear members, I am asking you to band together to help Vivi and the members on the board keep our branch alive and active. I believe that if you all pool your talents, our branch will remain as vital and productive as I know it can be.

One idea is that each Board member take a month and be responsible for the programs and events that are planned for that month. Vivi will be asking for your help. This is an appeal for your active participation. Please be a part of this.

I am counting on all of you to be there in my absence.
Thanks for your help.

Helping Hands and Good Times
Helping Hands The new branch Helping Hands program will make it easy for members to help one another, make new friends and acquaintances, and have a good time sharing our talents and interests.

We'd like you to complete a brief survey -- "what would you like to do," and "where would you like to do it?" Our matchmaker will take care of the "who do you want to do it with?"

Here are some ideas for reaching out to other members (just to get you thinking!):

1. Find a friend to walk or exercise with
2. Drive someone or get a ride to the library, a meeting, or another group
3. Invite someone to go antiquing
4. Get together for house repairs
5. Teach or learn computer skills
6. Invite a new friend to lunch or dinner
7. Read books out loud together
8. Invite a new friend to a concert or play; carpool to an event
9. Call or be called for/if homebound
10. Go to a movie with someone new
11. Bring your children or grandchildren together
12. Find someone who also enjoys doing puzzles or playing scrabble
13. Share an evening for a TV movie, a documentary or a political speech
14. Find another who enjoys sewing or knitting or making handcrafts

Jane Riley, our branch matchmaker, will be coordinating the givers and receivers of services. Please contact her for further information. 845-338-2384 or jriley9868@aol.com

Take two minutes to complete this survey. Click here.
Thanks.

VAWAOctober is Domestic Violence Month and AAUW excutive director Linda Hallman was invited to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the landmark Violence Against Women Act. The event was hosted by Vice President Biden at the VP's official residence.

Vice President Biden wrote the act, which provides funding for victim services and stronger enforcement efforts, while serving on the Senate Judiciary Committee in 1994, and AAUW's advocacy was instrumental in the enactment of the law. Although much progress has been made, AAUW and our coalition partners are working to support the International Violence Against Women Act, as well as the re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act in 2011.
