Greetings!
It seems that summer never really ends until Labor Day passes, so even though we're a week into the month, I'm just beginning to think about fall.

In this issue you'll read about some changes, like more Saturday meetings so more people can come, meet a few of our new members, and learn about some of the upcoming events.
Let's enjoy fall together,
The editor
Welcome Our New and Returning Members
Sunflowers
Tony and Charlotte Vallake have a son who was a talented high school athlete. He and his teams won awards and honors. However, their daughters, Tony told us at the membership tea, were equally as talented, and it bothered him that the girl's teams were ignored -- no awards, no annual dinner, no recognition.

That's when Tony became a feminist. (My term, not his.) It was more than 30 years ago, Title IX was still a young, relatively untested law. Tony organized Red Hook's first awards dinner for the girls' teams. The coaches announced the awards and the fathers presented them with carnations, starting a town tradition that continues to this day. That dinner became the first step in ensuring that girls in Red Hook had the same opportunities as boys to play, compete, and learn team work.

This is just one of the many stories about why we care about equity for women and girls that we shared at the membership brunch, August 29th.

Thanks to the leadership of Jean Semilof and Suki Kerr, ViVi Hlavsa's hospitality, and the excellent food organized by Ginger Yaple and Pat Stedge, we have nine new members, two lapsed members who have renewed, and a few more in the works. And now, Tony's one of our handful of male AAUW members.

Welcome Tony and Charlotte and our other new and returning members: Catheryn Berger, Rosemary Cyr, Denise Gardner, Joyce Greenberg, Jill Hyer, Lydia Mellos,  Val Wells, Judith Gustafson, and Andrea Newman-Winston.

We look forward to getting to know you.

We have 1 PM reservations at Shadows for lunch and the branch meeting.  (Lunch prices range from $8 to $30 - Dutch treat).

Look forward to seeing you to carpool at noon, or in Poughkeepsie at Shadows at 1pm, or the Vassar College Loeb Art Center at 3pm.

The Amazing Adventures of
Kavalier and Clay

Barnes & Noble Book Cover The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon
A young Jewish youth escapes Nazi ruled Czechoslovakia to New York City.

He is looking to make big money, fast, so that he can bring his family to freedom. His cousin, Brooklyn's own Sammy Clay, is looking for a collaborator to create the heroes, stories, and art for the latest novelty to hit the American dreamscape: the comic book. Out of their fantasies, fears, and dreams, Joe and Sammy weave the legend of that unforgettable champion the Escapist.
