T'ai chi chuan, which literally translates to "supreme ultimate fist", is a Chinese martial art and one of the most popular movement practices to come to us from the Eastern world. Offering similar benefits to yoga, the practice gives students an opportunity to cultivate harmony between the mind and the body through a series of mindfully-performed, often flow-like movements.
Within the broad context of t'ai chi, there are five different traditional schools in which one may train: Chen, Yang, Wu/Hao, Wu, and Sun. Across the many styles, techniques may include response drills, self-defense, weapons, and solo hand routines known as forms. The practice ultimately aims to reduce stress and create space in the body to allow our "chi (Qi)", or life force--the vital energy that exists in all living things--to flow more freely.
