July 18th- Traveling this Summer? Bring your Yoga.
|
The summer travel season is upon us, and many people are either gearing up for or just returning from trips to visit family and friends, while many others are taking a much-needed getaway from the stress of every day life. However, even as we are looking to de-stress, we all know that the two most commonly chosen modes of transportation-- airplanes and cars-- often come with their own stressors intact. This reinforces the idea that as we make our way to our desired destination, we must take our practice with us.
When flights are delayed, the lines at security are long, or traffic jams set us back, it's very natural to feel frustration rise. However, if we go into the experience with few set expectations and we are prepared to employ the techniques that we learn in our yoga practice--things like mindfulness, conscious breathing and different postures to shift our energy--we can adapt to any changes or disappointments that might surface on the journey--just as in life!
Get acquainted with ujjayi breath and come into it anytime conflicts or setbacks arise. It's a great way to calm your nervous system and return to the present moment. Also, don't hesitate to practice some yoga postures in the airline terminal, or even in your seat. Simple movements like a forward bend to create space in the back body, or a slow and mindful seated twist can go a long way. You're more likely to feel better by taking time to skillfully nourish your body, mind and spirit during such critical moments.
