June 27th- Where Spirituality, Religion and Yoga Meet

We all come to our yoga mats for different reasons. Some people would say they practice mostly to obtain the physical benefits that yoga has to offer. Others return to class time after time to keep the stress and tension of daily life at bay, while yet others dedicate themselves to this practice to strengthen the spiritual connection to something outside of themselves.

Not surprisingly, many of us turn to yoga for all 3 of these things! This practice is great in all it has to offer, yet also in its adaptability. We can "take what we like and leave the rest", finding a style of practice that completely serves and supports us in our current beliefs or what we may be seeking. Yoga is not a religion, but has much more to do with spirituality. This is definitely a subject that causes controversy, both within religious groups and the yoga community-- it's a healthy discussion, and it's ok!

What we can be sure of, is that in strengthening the mind-body connection through conscious awareness of the breath, and moving with this awareness intact, we may discover an increased ability to transcend the physical and unite with spirit-- when we are breathing, we are literally inspired--filled with spirit.

Because we wish to support and honor the many different inspirations from which our practice unfolds, this summer we will be offering a 3-week Holy Yoga series, a class which provides students of Christian faith with the opportunity to practice yoga in a class guided by words and philosophy that align naturally with that faith. For more information on this program offering, visit the class description below.
